FASTENING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, Roennr C. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Needham Heights, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specifii 13 and the auxiliary door 15 upon being released automatically opens forwardly and cation.
This invention relates .to improvements in fastening devices. 7
It is the object of the invention to provide means of access to the customary hook by which a fire alarm is sounded, said hook being located in the interior of the ordinary fire alarm box. 7
It is also the object of the invention to furnish said means of access with akeylessfastening device which may be easily operated by people with honest intentions who are capable offollowing instructions and also of reaching said fastening device with both hands but which will present difliculties to persons of immature years and of such small stature that they can only reach said fastening devicewith one hand. i V
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

In the drawings, 10 represents a fire alarm box, the same being provided upon the interior thereof with the usual casing 11 containingthe operating mechanism From the interior of the' casing 11 pro ects the customary hook 12 which upon being pulled downwardly sets .the mechanism in operation to sound the alarm. :The firealarm box 10 is provided with the usual door 13 by which access may be obtained to the entire pivoted at 28 to the door 13.

Upon the door 13 is hinged at 14 an auxiliary door 15 which upon beingopened gives access through an opening 16 in the main door 13 to the hook 12 only. The auxiliary door 15 has fastened to its rear side a spring 17 which engages the door downwardly exposing to view the hook 12 together with the instructions for using the same. Also fast to the rear of the auxiliary door 15 are catches 18 which are adapted to be engaged by av horizontal bar 19 mounted to slide vertically in guides 20 fastened to the interior of the door 13 adjacent to opposite sides of the auxiliary door 15. Pins-21 fast to the bar 19 are adapted to engage the guides 20 and prevent transverse movement of said bar 19. The bar 19 is engaged adjacent to each end thereof uponits under- 19 is engaged adjacent to each end thereof,
upon its upper side by rolls 26 on arms 27 The pivots 28 extend through the door 13 and have fastened thereto on the exterior of said door handles 29. Stop pins 30 projecting from the interior of-the door 13 limit the movement of the arms 27 and therefore also limit the movement of the handles 29.. A bracket 31 is adjustably fastened to the bar 19 by bracket 31. The bracket is further provided with a finger 3 1 which is adapted to engage 'the hook 12 when it is desired to use the fastening device to. simultaneously release the auxiliary door115 and sound the alarm.
At such times-the bracket31 is moved tolocked and the auxiliary door 15 is closed and fastened, the person desiring to sound the alarm grasps the handles 29 and simul-v taneously turns them in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 1. The bar 19-will slide vertically against the pressure of the springs 22 and if each of the handles 29 is turned an equal distance the bar 19 will be disengaged from the catches 18, whereupon the sprlng 17 will automatically open the auxiliary door 15 and said door will fall forwardly and downwardly thereby exposing the hook 12 to view. The hook 12 may then be pulled downwardly as indicated and the alarm will be sounded. If, on the other hand, an attempt to gain access to the box is made by a small child who may only be able to reach one of the handles 29, the turning of said handles will force the bar 19 into the posi-' tion illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 3 and said bar will still be in engagement with one of the catches 1S and the auxiliary doorwill remain closed. lVhen the handle is released the bar and the handle will return to their normal positions.
If it should be desired to use the fastening device to simultaneously release the auxiliary door and sound the alarm, the operation is as follows:
he bracket 31 which when illustrated in full lines Fig. 3 is out of alinenient with the hook 12 is moved toward the right in said figure into the position illustrated in dotted lines at which time the finger 341 will be in alinement with and slightly above the hook 12. The bracket 31 will be held by the bolts 32 permanently in this position. In other respects the entire operation of the mechanism is exactly like that previously described. The result accomplished by locating the finger 3% as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 is that the fire alarm will be sounded simultaneously with the automatic opening of the auxiliary door 15. The finger 341 is so located that the turning of one of the handles 29 and the consequent lowering of one end of the bar 19 will not bring said finger 34 into engagement with the hook 12 to sound the alarm. It is necessary that each of the handles 29 shall be turned simultaneously a suliicient distance to give'to the der that the downward movement of said bar may be transmitted to the hook 12.
Having thus specifically described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a fastening bar for said door located upon the interior of said box, a pair of handles located upon the exterior of said box, and a pair of armsoperatively connected with said handles and having engagement with said fastening bar upon opposite ends thereof, whereby said door may be released.
2. A fastening device having, in combination a box a door hin ed to said box a 3lu- 3 7 b 7 rality of catches fast to said door, a spring fast to said door having engagement with said box, a fastening bar for said door and a pair of handles having engagement with said fastening bar upon opposite ends thereof, adapted to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches, whereby said door may be released and automatically opened.
3. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches upon said door, a spring fast to said door having engagement with said box, a fastening bar having engagement with the catches upon said door, a pair of handles having engagement with said fas-.
tening bar upon opposite ends thereof, wherebysaid door may be released and automatically opened and means to automatically return said fastening bar and said handles to their normal positions.
4. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a pair of catches fast to said door, a fastening bar mountedupon said box, means to force said fastening bar into engagement with said catches and thereby fasten said door and a pair of handles having engagement with said fastening bar upon opposite ends thereof, whereby said fastening bar may be forced out of engagement with said catches and the door released.
5. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches fast to said door, a fastening bar, means yieldingly engaging said fastening bar adjacentto the opposite ends thereof adapted to force said fastening bar into locking engagement with said catches, and a pair of handles having en'- gagement with said fastening bar upon 0pposite ends'thereof adapted to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches and thereby release said door.
6. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches fast to said door, a fastening bar, springs yieldingly engaging said fastening bar adjacent to the opposite ends thereof adapted to force said fastening bar into engagement with said catches, and a pair of handles having engagement with said fastening bar upon opposite ends thereof adapted to be operated simultaneously in opposition to said springs to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches.
7. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches fast to said door, a plurality of guides fast to said box, a fastening bar slidable transversely within said guides, a plurality of springs engaging said fastening bar adjacent to the opposite ends thereof adapted to yieldingly force said fastening bar into locking engagement with said catches, and a pair of handles operatively connected with said fastening bar at opposite ends thereof adapted to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches and thereby release said door.
8. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches fast to said door, a plurality of guides fast to said box, a fastening bar slidable transversely within said guides, a plurality of springs engaging said fastening bar adjacent to the opposite ends thereof adapted to yieldingly force said fasten ing bar into locking engagement with said catches, a spring attached to said door adapted to force said door open and a pair of handles operatively connected with said fastening bar at opposite ends thereof adapted to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches and thereby release and automatically open said door.
9. A fastening device having, in combination, a box, a door hinged to said box, a plurality of catches fast to said door, a plurality of guides fast to said box, a fastening bar slidablej transversely within said' guides, a plurality of springs engaging said fastening bar adjacent to the opposite ends thereof adapted to yieldingly force said fastening bar into locking engagement with said catches, a pair of arms pivotally mounted upon the interior of said box, a roller mounted at the end of each of said arms and adapted to engage said fastening bar and a pair of handles located upon the exterior of said box operatively connected with said arms and adapted to force said fastening bar out of engagement with said catches.
