APPLICATION FILED AUG. I5, 1919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. MORAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
j CROWD-BESIESTING AIRON 0R GUARD FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MQRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crowd-Resisting Aprons or Guards for Motor-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this SPGOlfiCZLtlOIL V This inventlon has reference, generally,
to improvements in motor-vehicles and, the
7 present invention relates, more particularly,
to animproved attachment to a motor-cycle, in the form of a protector-guard, apron, skirt, or the like,'which is easily and quickly attachable to a motor-cycle, or similarvehicle, to adapt the same for use, during parades or large gatherings of people upon the streets, in pressing back, into line upon the thesurging crowd without danger of injury to the persons in the crowd.
T The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object toprovide a novel and simply-constructed attachment for use with motor-cycles and similar vehicles, whereby the same are especially adapted for use for trafiic ofiicers, in pressing back forwardlysurgmg crowds, in precisely the same manner as is now done by horse-mounted police, the attachment being made in the form of a guard or apron, mounted upon one side of the frame of the vehicle, and extending around the front and rear of the vehicle, the
apron beingof such arrangement and shape, that it will push back the crowd, without injury to the persons with whom the apron of the moving vehicle is brought in contact.
Other objects of the present invention'not at this time more particularly enumerated.
' vwillbe clearly understood from the following detailed description of thepresent invention.
. With the various objects of the present 7 invention in view, the-said invention consists, primarily, in the novel guard or apronattachment for motor-vehicles hereinafter,
, more fully set forth; and, the present invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several Specification of Letters Patent.

is a top or plan view of the devices repre sented in said'Fig. 1; and Fig.3 isarear end View of the same. v
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the safety attachment, skirt, orapron, showing aportion of the said attachment provided' with a reinforcing orstrengthening means. .Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described Referring now to the said figures of drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates any usualframe-workof a motor-cycle, comprising the steering-fork 2, and the trussmembers 3.
the
Suitably connected with and extending g5 laterallyfrom the said truss-members 3 are supporting members or. elements, usually in the form, of rods, as 4 any number of such rods being used, and said rods having their outer ends suitably secured to receiving sockets .5, or other suitable fastening means,
suitably secured upon the inner surface-portions of a guard, apron, or SkIIlJ, as 6. This guard orapron 1s usuallyof the general configuration shown in the drawings, the lower portion of the same being inwardly curved,
asat7, so as toprovide a suitably flanged portion along the lower marginal edge of. the guard or apron, substantially as-shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At its respective ends, the said guard oriapronis formed with curved portions 8 and 9, terminating in angularly extending guarding members, as 10 and 11, these members partiallyincasing the suitable safety-guards or fenders to prevent injury to a person when driving the vehicle into or against amass or crowd of people. From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3 it will be seen that the said'guard or apron is 110 of such height from the ground, both at the top andbottom, thatthe actions of the op-.
;wheels of the. motor-cycle, and providing erator or driver of the vehicle will not be interfered with; and, furthermore, that no obstructions to the running of the vehicle will be presented, and that the'vehicle can readily be driven upon the curb at the sidewalk of a street, or onto a safety isle should or braces 14:, all preferably made of wood, 7
or other suitable light material. Extending from the frame-worr'of the vehicle, preferably at the rear end-portion of said frame, is a suitably constructed and laterally extending auxiliary frame-connection, as 15, carrying an auxiliary wheel 16, the purpose of which is to properly balance the vehicle, as will be clearly evident.
In using the guard, apron, or skirt, in traflic upon a motor-cycle, it is customary to use the attachment upon the right-hand side of thevehicle, the latter being propelled by the oficer against the front line of the surging crowd, the guard or apron striking said line slantingly without harm to the people; it will be understood, however, that such guard or apron may be used upon the left-hand side of the vehicle, or such guards or aprons may be used upon both sides of the vehicle, if desired. 7
It will be understood, therefore, that I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, nor to the details of the construction of the said parts, as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangement and combinations of theseveral devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction, nor to the shape or configuration of the said guard or apron, as shown in the accompanying drawings.
I claim:-

, 3. In combination with the frame of a motor-vehicle, ,a crowd-resisting safetyguard or apron, said apron having its endportions embracing the wheels of the vehide, and a means'of attachment for securing the same in position upon said frame, said guard or apron being provided along its lower marginal edge-portion with an inwardly extending flange.
4. In combination with the frame of aa crowd-reslstmg safety-.
