ooAsTING DEVICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application inea January 15, 1920. serial No. 351,586.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPHVLA VALLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coasting Devices, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices adapted for coasting purposes on snow, ice,- or other comparatively smooth surfaces, and has for its object the production of such a device, economical and durable in construction, and very attractive and effective in service. To this'end it consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts,
Figure l is a side elevation, dotted lines showing the construction when intended for coasting parties where a number of people may occupy the coaster at the same time;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the coaster shown in full lines in Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same.
In the drawings, l represents the seat part, which may be of such length as is desired, either to accommodate one or several people. 2 is a steering post pivoted in the front end of the seat l provided with a cross armB or an equivalent steering means. Mounted in the lower enlarged end of the steering post 2 is a runner or coasting member 4t pivotally supported in the steering' post at 5 `so as to permit easy adaptation to the coasting surface. 6-6 are arms rigidly secured to the steering post 2, serving the double purpose of a foot rest for the pilot and to aid in manipulating the steering post. 7 is a support firmly secured to the seat vboard l and suitably braced as by a brace 8 extending from the seat board to the support 7. At the bottom, the support 7 is extended outward in each direction as at 9, and has secured thereto suitable coasting members 10,
which are pivotally supported as at 11, per- Y mitting the said members to adjust themf selves to the surface of the track.
When the coaster is intended for a party, the seat board 1 may be extended as shown in dotted lines in F ig. l at' l2, the construction being substantially the same. 13 is an upward extensionat the rear, serving the purpose of both a iinish and for maintaining a rider in a secure seat upon the device. The extension l2 may be such length as desired, as is now found in coasting devices generally.
Any suitable means maybe employed'for l attaching a ldraw-rope or chain to the device. As shown, a suitable hole 14 or equivalent part is formed at the front end ofthe seat board for that purpose.
The operation is apparent. The pilot sitsl at the front end ofthe device with his two feetY uponthe supportV 6--6 and his handsY firmly grasping the steeringbar at 3. By
this means he is enabledto readily guide and control the movements ofthe device.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit. of fmy invention;`
hence I do not wish to be understood as'limting kmyself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination ef parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
VV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A coasting device comprising a seat board,
a steering post pivotally mounted in the front end of said board and provided with a handle for controllinglthe same, a coasting member connected intermediate its ends to the steering post and capable of a rock-` ing movement, a pair of angular foot supports carried by the steering post, one. dis.; posed at each side thereof, the seat board having a downwardiextension near its rear end, a pair of coasting members pivotally connected at a point substantially midway 'l of their ends with said downward extension,
and a back connected with the seat board at its rear end and extending upwardly `from the surface thereof. v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
