7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2e, iaeo.
Application filed December 15, 1919; Serial No. 344,825. r
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. Nam, a citizen of the United States, residing at E. Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Removable Hand-Rail Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This inventionrelates to' a construction in connection with stairs are almost universally dispensed with, although necessary where children or elderly persons must use the stairs.
But when a hand rail is used as a permanent fixture, it interferes with the moving of furnitureup and down stair-ways because it subtracts a certain amount of valuable space.
One of the purposes of this invention'is to provide a hand rail for use with stairs which is a stable and rigid structure when in position and may be used as hand rails are usually used, but on the other hand it may be readily removed so as to give the maximum amount of space which the stairway affords when necessity requires.
Not only is the removab e hand rail a useful appurtenance to stairways in dwellings, but in factories and other buildings where usually as much space is desired as may be afforded when. articles are moved up and down the stairway.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 illustrates in elevation, a stairway in connection with which the handrail of my invention is used; Fig. 2 is an elevation with portions in sec tion showing the engagement between a supporting member and the arm which co6perates therewith; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line ii-A of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3. I
, Referring to the drawings,1indicates a hand rail 'whichissuitably secured to extending arms 2. Thesev arms at their inner ends are adapted to be removably supported in a wall of the building and extend a suit- I able distance out from the wall to permit the hand of a passer to grasp and obtain support of the hand rail.
In orderto obviate any extensions whatsoever, I ceives the arms. pressed into the wall of the buildingand'lie substantially flush with the I wall of the building. Such a supporting memberis in dicated at 3 and comprises preferably a unitary construct the support which re- 2 so that it may be de-- structure orxcasingfiwhich has a, front 7 wall 4 that lies flush with the wallet the a building- There is'an inwardly extending box like part such as indicated. at .5 and whenlthe fixture just describedis inserted 1 in the wall the front face 4 is secured by use of screws extending through suitable openings such as indicated at 6. The front face 4 is provided with an opening such as indicated at 6, this opening being of any desired form and in the present instance is shown as substantially rectangular.
The inner end of the arm 2 is with an extension 2 which in thickness is substantially the thickness between thefront and rear wall of the opening 5, and the width of the extension 2* is substantally the provided I width between the side walls of the memher 3 so that when the extension 2 'is in place within the member 3, there isja close fit which prevents rattling or undue movement. The arm 2;w1th its extension 2 is inserted through the opening '7 in the manner indicated in dotted lines irr-Fig. 2 and when the arms are so inserted the arms and hand rail are definitely positioned with respect to the wall.
As will be seen,
the hand rail and arms may be removed by slightly elevating the same and lowering the hand rail so as to,
permit the extensions 2 for the arms 2 to slip out through the opening 7.
As will be apparent, various modifications of the structure disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
prising a hand rail proper, arms to which the hand rail is ing an offset portion, supporting members Having described my lnvention, I claim-- '1. A removable hand rail structure com secured, each of said arms'havailixed to a wall, each supporting member comprising a'box like structure having a front wall with an opening therein, the offset portion of each arm extending into the box like structure and behind the front wall thereof and the portion of each arm adjacent the off-set part extending through ture having a front Wall with an opening therein, the oflt'set portion of each arm extending within the support and behind the front wall, the adjacent portion of the arm extending through the opening in the wall of the supportingmember with which it associated.
3. A removable hand rail structure comprising a'hand rail proper, arms to which the hand rail issecured, each of said arms having an offset portion, supporting members affixed to the wall, eachof said supporting members having a front wall with an. opening therein, the said frontwall being flush with the wall to which the support is aflixed, the offset portion of each arm extending within and behind the front wall of each supporting member with the adjacent portion of each arm extending through the opening in the front wall of the supporting member with which it is associated.
4. A removableha-nd rail structure comprising a hand rail proper, arms to which the hand rail i secured, each of said arms having an angular offset portion, supporting members aflixed to the wall, each of said supporting members comprisinga box like structure having a front and rear wall, the frontwall of said supporting members being provided with an opening, the offset portion of each arm extending within a supporting member and fitting between the front and rear wall of the supporting member below the opening in said supporting member, the adjacent portion of each arm extending through the opening in the supporting member with which it is associated.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
