Description

C. L. F. MOGUE. STARTING DEVICE FOR EXPLOSION ENGINES.
' APPLICATION FILED OCT. 1, 1918. 1356,6488
Patented Oct. 26, 1920 CHARLES LOUIS FRANCIS MOG-U'E, 0F LE HAVRE, FRANCE.
STARTING DEVICE FOR EXPLOSION-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentd Oct, 25, 1920.
Application filed October 1, 1918. Serial No. 256,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LOUIS FRANoIs Moeuri, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Le Havre, Seine, Inferieure, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting. Devices for Explosion-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The invention has for its object the application of explosives for starting explosion engines, and the device by which the said application may be conveniently putinto practice.
A single apparatus or a number of apparatus equal to that of the cylinders may be used; the same may be actuated by the motor shaft by means of pinions or chains.
The said invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying. drawing, in which .Figure 1 shows the starting device, partly in elevation, partly in vertical section.
Fig. 2'is a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the olial.
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same dial.
Fig. 5 is means for holding the. hammer in set position and permitting it to move to firing position.
The apparatus comprises a headbody 1 on which is screwed the movable head 2 provided with a hand lever 3, the said moveable head being closed by a stopper 4 also screwed thereon; inside the headis the hammer 5 with its spiral spring 6. The hammerwill act upon a priming cap 7 at the center of a case or cartridge 8 which contains the powder load, the base of the said cartridge has a groove 9 wherein engages a flange 10 acting as a cartridge-extractor and provided in the lower part of the movable head.
-The device may be very easily put into position and released, owing to the U-sha ed groove 9; the trigger or loosing mem er may be of any kind, such as, for instance a finger 12 which will engage a slit 13 controlled by a lever 14 carried by the hammer.
There is a starter for each cylinder and each of the said starters is connected with the cylinder by means of a pipe.
a perspective detail showing the In operation the starter, which has to actuate the engine, is loaded by means of a cartridge, for this purpose and in order to ascertam upon what cylinder it is of advantage to act, there is provided near the startmg devices a dial 15 over or in front of which will move a pointer 11 actuated I by the engine cam shaft and rotating, for instance 1n the example of a four-strokecycle-engine, at the half-speed of the latter.
It is very easy to ascertain the position of the pistons, as the dial is provided with numbers which correspond to the number of cylinders and the pointer will indicate the cylinder which has to receive the impulse of the explosive.
What I claim is:
1. In a starting device for explosive engmes, the combination of a casing formed wlth a cartridge receiving seat, a plug screwed into the casing, an extractor on the plug to extract a cartridge from the casing, the plug having a central bore and an angular slot, a rod extending through the bore I of the plug adapted to explode a cartridge held in the seat, a flange on the rod, a sprmg between the flange and the top wall of the bore, a trigger extending from the rod and through the angular slot, whereby to hold the rod elevated and the spring under compression, or to release the rod, and a handle on the rod to rotate same to set or release the trigger;
2. In a starting device for explosive engines, the combination of a casing formed with a cartridge receiving seat, a plug screwed into the casing, the plug having a central bore and an an lar slot, a rod extending through the ore, and provided with a trigger which engages in the angular slot, a flange on the rod, aspring interposed between the top wall of the bore and the flange, and a handle for raising and rotating the rod to set it in the firing position.
Witness my signature this 30 day of I August, 1918.
am, ermine LOUIS FRANCIS.
