UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOHN W. MoDEBMOTT, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING PADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,653, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MODER- MOTT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Vvhecls for lropelling Boats, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to regulate the projection of the bucket from the axis of the wheel or shaft at different points of revolution, so that it shall have the greatest hold upon the water at that point where it would effect the best results; and it consists .in the construction of the parts whereby the result is obtained, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section side view, and Fig. 2 is a transverse view of same.
A represents a portion of the hull of a vessel; B, the space in the stern or other portion of the hull of a vessel that is to receive the propeller-wheel and other parts connected therewith. G is the rudder, and its D is the shaft, bearing on journals cl d. E is a sliding bucket or paddle, and freely slides longitudinally in a mortise or opening that goes transversely through the shaft D. c e are friction-rollers upon the outer ends of the buckets or paddles E. e e are friction-rollers attached to the shaft D, and bear upon each side of the sliding bucket E, and e e are friction-rollers attached to the shaft at the ends of the mortise through the shaft and bear upon the edges of the sliding bucket E. There can be two or more of these sliding buckets, when desired. F F are curved guides, made fast to the hull of the vessel above shaft D, and curved eccentric thereto, or of such form that when the bucket is in a horizontal position it will project equally at each side of shaft D, but when in a perpendicular position will project very much more below than above the shaft. These curved guides do not come together at their lowest projection, but there is a space, f, left between them in order to permit of the removal of themselves or the buckets at any time or for any cause. The
curvature of these guides can be changed so that they may be more or less eccentric to the axis of shaft D, as circumstances may require. G is a cog-wheel upon the driving shaft 9 and gears into toothed wheel G upon the axle d of the shaft D, and through these gear-wheels a revolving motion is given to said shaft D and buckets E by any motive power-such as steam, compressed air, or other convenient or proper power.
By this construction and position of the driving or propellingwheel by having the buckets project more at the point where such greater projection would give much better return in the result without any increase of power, it will readily be seen that by the change of projection of the end of the bucket when it is used to propel the vessel forward by its being forced deeper into the water by the guide it has a greater hold upon the water, and must therefore produce a/ greater effeet, while the opposite end of the same bucket presents little or no resistance, as the projection is merely nothing. Also, by this construction the buckets do not lift the water; hence no great wave is produced in the wake of the wheel, and if the vessel is used in the water of a canal no sensible washing away of the earth banks of the canal will take place, thus making it a desirable arrangement for use on canals.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The bucket or paddle E, freely sliding in a mortise that goes transversely through the shaft D, substantially as herein described.
2. The sliding buckets or paddles E having the end friction-rollers e e and freely sliding in transverse mortise in shaft D, in combination with the guide-rods F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the shaft D having a transverse mortise therein, sliding bucket E, and friction-rollers e e, substantially as herein described.
JOHN W. MODERMOTT.
