Specification of Letter P n l atented Get. 19, 192% Application filed October 17, 1919. Serial No. 331,384.
To all whom if may con cern Be it known that I, Vi-narrate E, JoNEs, Jr.,.a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inventede new and useful Improvement in Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to cans, and has spe cial reference to the means for the securing or filllltlClllllOIlil oi the covers to sheet metal cans. p
The object otXmy invention is to provide a cheap, simple and etlicient means of securing metal covers to sheet metal cans, which will enable the cover to be quickly and readily attached to and removed from the can body, and when in place on the can the cover will form a tight and secure connection with the can.
To these ends my invention consists, generallystated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of. parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- I Figure 1 is a sectional view of a sheet metal can embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same showiiig a portion of the cover removed;
Fig. 3 is a. side elevation of the upper portion of the can, and
Fig. 4 i an enlarged sectional View of the upper portion of the can.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate 1 like parts in each of the figures of the drawing. 1
As illustrated in the drawing, '1 shows the sheet metal can bodyylwhieh is provitled with the usual bdttin'n 2, sides 3 and opeiiw, upper end l. 1 The usual bail 4 is connected in the usual manner to ears 5 secured to the sides,3 of the can body 1, and such sides may be formed outwardly tapering from the upper end 4; of the can body 1, (s shown at c.
The upper edge 7 at the upper end i of the can body 1 is bent outward and then in Ward to form the double flange 8, and such flange is also dished to term the curved slot 9 in the upper face of the same.
The cover or lid 10 is also formed of sheet metal and is bent to form so as to fit within and over the upper end 4 of the can body 1 by being substantially dish-shape, which provides for such cover having a central hollow portion 11 within the same for forming a side wall 12, with the upper end of such wall being bent outwardly and downwardly to form the curved portion 13 and p the depending portion ll, respectively. Lugs 15 are also formed at the lower edges of the depending portion 1% on the cover 10 and at spaced intervals tor engaging with the outer edge of the flange 8 on the can body 1 when the cover is in place on such body, as hereinafter described When it is desired to place the cover 10 on the can body 1, after the body is tilled and secure such cover to such body and form a tightfloint, a gasket 16 of rubber or other suitable material is placed within the outer -hollow portion 17 in such cover formed by the sid wall 12, eurved portion 13 and de- I pending portion 14 on such cover. The cover 10 can then be fitted within and over the upper end l of the can body l by pressinn such cover down on such end, which will allow the gasket 16 to fit within the seat 9 in the flange 8 on the body, with the side wall 12 on the cover bearing against the side wall 3 on the body and the lugs 15 on the cover bearing against the outer edge oi: the flange 8 on the body, thereby slightly coin.- pressing the gasket-between the hollow portion 17 in the cover and the said flange. lVhen the can is filled, the cover 10 is secured thereto by bending: the lugs 15 under the flange 8. as shown by dotted lines in Fig.
It will thus be seen that in the use of my improved (an the cover will he firmly and securely held in place on the can body and the parts will be substantially locked to-- lg'ether, While at the same time such cover and body can be readily and conveniently se- W on the can body, and that various other changes in the material, design and construction of the can be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In combination with a can having the upper edge o1 the side Wall turned outwardly to form a flange having a seat. Within the upper face of the same, of a dish shaped cover having the side edges turned to form a side wall and a hollow portion terminating in a depending portion, said last named against the side wall of the can and said depending portion being adapted to engage the outer edge of said flange, and a gasket between said hollow portion and said seat.
in combination with a can having the upper edge of its side wall turned outwardly and then inwardly to form a donbled flange having a seat in the upper face oi the same, of a dislrshaped cover having its side edges turned to form a side wall and a hollow portion terminating in a depending portion, said last named side wall being adapted to fit against the side wall of the can and said depending portion being adapted to engage the onter'edge of said flange, and a gasket between said bottom portion and said seat. i Y
3. In combination with a can having the upper edge ofits side wall turned outwardly to form a flange having a curved seat within side wall being adapted to [it tion.
the upper face of the same, of a dish-shaped cover having its side edges turned to form a side wall and a. hollow portion terminating in a depending portion, said last named side wall being adapted to fit against the side wall of the can and said depending portion being adapted to engage the outer edge of said flange, anda gasket between said 1101- low portion and said curved seat.-
"4. A sheet metal can comprising a body portion having an outwardly extending Clipped lip portion, a gasket seated in the cupped portion of said lip, and a 'cover member having a depressed inner portion adapted to engage said body portion of said can and depending side portions adapted to cooperate with said depressed portion to inc ose said gasket and said cupped lip por- 5. A can comprising a body portion having an outwardly bent lip, a cover member having a cupped center portion adapted to closely fit within the top of said body portion and having a depending outer rim portion, said rim portion being adapted to fit over and partially inclose said lip, and a gasket interposed between the rim of said cover member and the lip of said body portion.
In testimony whereof, I, the said l/VHIT- FIELD E; JoNns, Jr., have hereunto set my hand. WHITFIELD E. JONES, JR. Witness.
