To all 'whom t may concern.' n l y Be it known that I, Fnnn J. MILLER,` a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitts# bui-gh, in the county of Allegheny and yState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Locking-Receptacles, of which the following is a speciication. f

This invention relates to locking receptacles, designed primarily for the reception of milk bottles, although it is to bey understood that it can be employed for any purpose wherein it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide a receptacle of such type, in a manner ashereinafter set forth, with means operated by the bottle closure or cap thereof, when the bottle. is placed within the receptacle for locking the lid of the latter closed to prevent surreptitious removal of the bottle from the receptacle.V

Vith the foregoing and other objects vin view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the-scope of the claims hereunto appended.

The receptacle comprises a base 1, a hol low body portion 2 and a lid or cover 3, which is hinged to the topv of the body portion 2, as at 4;. The body portion 2-provides a chamber 5, in which is adapted to be mounted the bottle 6, or any other article,`

to bel housed or safe guarded. The walls or wall of the chamber 5 are lined with nonconducting or impervious material 7, and the height of the chamberp is such that it will extend above the top of the bottle 6, thelatter having a closure or cap 8.

Arranged within the casing` 10, is a flat spring 16, having `its forward end 'secured tothe 4plunger 12 and its rearcnd fixed with the casing 10 and lid' 3, so that when the boit17, in the casing 15, is released the spring15will causelthc lid 3 to spring open. The springs 1/1 and 16 provide a suspension means for the plunger 12. r

The bolt 17 is formedwith apocket 18 and a slot 19 in casing 15, and extended into the pocket 18, is the upper end of the spring 11i, and the saidnpper end of the spring 1/1 i is connected to the bolt 17 by a pin 20, lthe latter slides within the slot 19, and, under constructionl the spring 1/1 is connected to the bolt 17 by a pin and slot connection;

Secured to the body portion 2, is a keeper, which is formed of a vertically disposed casing 21, having an opening 22 for the kentrance of the bolt 17. lThe keeper projects above the top edge of the body portion 2,

and the opening 22 is in the path of movement of thebolt 17. The keeper has a key hole opening 23 in the side thereof, and is also formedwith a key guide 24; for a key so that the latter when turned can force the bolt 17 rearwardly to release the lid, the pin and" slot connection providing for this movement of the bolt.

The casing 15 is inclosedvrby a strip 25,

which projects beyond the lid 3 and overlaps the keeper.k The extension of the strip 25 provides a finger piece or grip 26 so that the lidf canr be lifted conveniently.

Fromthe foregoing arrangement and conf struction of parts the bolt 17 willbe shifted 'into the keeper when theplungerk comesin contact with the cap in the bottle mouth, the

cap acting'as an abutment for the plungerV which willforce thespring 14 upwardly and fforwardly thereby shifting thebolt into the keeper and locking the lid. When the bolt is shiftedrearwardly clear of the keeper thev spring 16, as well as the spring 14, will act to spring open the lid.

VJ hat I claim is:-

l. A receptacle for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion, a bolt-keeper secured therewith and having an opening adapted to be arranged in the path or' a bolt, a lid pivoted to `the body portion and provided with an opening, a plunger positioned below said opening, a key released looking bolt Carried by the lid and adapted to engage in the keeper for locking the lid, a curved spring slidably connected to the locking bolt and extending through said opening and connected to the `plunger and adapted to cause the shitting or' the bolt to locking position when the plunger en-V gages an article within lthe body portion, and a flat spring connected to the plunger and to the lid. Y

2. A receptacle for the purpose set Jforth comprising a body portion, a bolt keeper secured therewith, a lid hinged to the body portion, a locking bolt arranged on the lid and Capable of being shifted to engage in the keeper to look thellid lto the body portion, a plunger below the lid and operated by the abutment thereof against an article within the body portion, `a curved spring slidably connected at its upper end to the bolt and its lower end to upper end of the plunger and extended down through the lid, and a spring arranged wholly below the lid connected therewith and to the plunger, said springs providing a suspension means for the plunger;

3. A receptacle for the purpose set-forth comprising Aa body portion, a lid hinged thereto, a bolt` `Keeper carried by the body portion, said lid having an opening, a curved spring extended down through said opening, a bolt on the lid and having a pin and slot Connection with the upper end of ,said spring, a easing on the lid inelosing said bolt, a plunger secured at its upper end to the lower kend of the lserine' a iat snring` ma t ,l
