THOMAS SHIVELEY, OF NORTH LANSING, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO BENJAMIN E. HART, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlN-SCOURERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnonets SHIVELEY, of North Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan,'have invented a new and valuable lrnprovernent in Grain-Scouring Machines; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon: m
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view, and Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse section, of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of two or more revolving spiraltoothed cylinders, inclosed in cylindrical cases connected by a tube, and having a fan attachment, for the purpose of thoroughly cleaning and scouring Wheat or othersmall grain, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The letter A in the drawing represents the frame. B, the revolving spiral-toothed cylinders; G, the cylinder-cases; D, the fan-box situated under the lower cylinder-case; E, the fan or blower; F, the tube connecting the two cylinder-cases; G, the discharge-opening into the fan-box; H, the longitudinal perforations in the under side of the cylinder-cases; I, the final discharge-openin g from the bottom of the K, the side-openin g or mouth of the fan-box, for-the discharge'of dust or smut; L, the hopper or opening for the reception of the grain to be scoured. The pulley M on the shaft N receives and gives motion to the up per cylinder, while band-wheel O, by belt P or its equivalent, conveys motion to the lower cylinder. Band-pulleys Q and R, by belt S, aid in transmitting motion to the fan or blower. The wheat or other grain to be scoured is poured into the hopper-opening at L, and is, by the spiral arrangement of the teeth or pins on cylinder B, carried forward to the opposite end of cylinder-caseO, where it passes through tube F into the lower cylinder-case O, and is, by the reversed spiral arrangement of the teeth or pins on cylinder B, carried onward to discharge-opening Gr, where it falls into fan box D, and through the final opening I into a box or bin beneath. The fan or blower E, operating in box D, more thoroughly frees the grain from dust or smut that has failed to pass through the longitudinal perforations H in the under side of the cylinder-eases Gthis dust or smut, being ejected from the mouth K of the fan-box D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= In a grain-scouring machine, the combinatio i, with the cylindrical cases 0, the connect ing-tube F, and the fan-attachment E, of the cylinders B having teeth arranged spirally but in opposite directions, and arranged to revolve in said cases, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS SHIVELEY.
