ILED AUG 23 I APPLICATI 91.9. 1,355,848. I Patented 0011.19, 1920.
WALTER F. ROGERS, OF CHICAGO: ILLINOIS.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 19, 1920.
Application filed August 23, 1919. Serial No. 319,446.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WALTER F. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of stoves in which the oven is heated by the combustion of either solid or gaseous fuel. In stoves of this type, a gas burner is generally mounted inside of the oven, and a fire-box for the combustion ofsolid fuel communicates with a heat passage located in the walls of and beneath the oven.
The main objects of the present invention oven adapted to serve as a baflle wall for uniformly distributing the heat from the combustion of the'solid fuel, and also as a conduit for delivering the secondary supply of air to the gas burner within the oven; and to provide anwimproved form and arrangement of valve means for controlling the flow of air through said hollow partition. 1
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the oven showing a ring shaped gas burner mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved form of hollow partition. 1
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the improved valve means for controlling the ad mission of air to the partition.
In the common form of kitchen range which is adapted for the combustion of solid fuel, the fire-box is generally located at one side of the oven, and the hot gases from the fire-box pass over the top of the oven down around the opposite side thereof and then back through the'heat passage which is located beneath the oven. In this type of stove, a bafile wall or flue strip in the form of a partition is secured in the heat passage beneath the oven, so as to uniformly distribute the heat beneath the bottom of the oven by causing the hot gases to travel in a circuitous path before they reach the smoke flue. Heretofore this partition, which forms the baflle wall, has generally within the oven, an opening is formed in the base plate of the oven to serve as a secondary air inlet for the gas burner. In the latter construction, it is also necessary to provide a "baffie wall in the heat passage beneath. the oven to distribute the heat when the stove is burning a solid fueli In the present invention, the baffle wall in the heat chamber and the secondary air inlet for the gas burner are combined in a single device in the form of a hollow partition open at the back of the stove, and the opening in the bottom of the stove is avoided. In the construction shown in the drawings, the invention is embodied in a,
kitchen range comprising" an oven 1 having a gas burner 2mounted therein, and a firebox.3 located at oneiside of the oven for the combustion of a solid fuel.
The top of the oven is spaced. from the top plate of'the stove, so as to form a heat passage 4 communicating at one end with the fire-box. 3 and at-the other end with a passage 5 formed at the side 6 of the stove. The bottom of the oven is formed of double walls so as to provide a'heat passage 7 which communicates with the fire-box through the passages 4 and 5. When the stove is burning solid fuel, the heat travels through the passages 4, 5 and 7 in the direc'-- tion ofv the arrows shown in Fig.2.
The gas burner is similar to that shown in my ,copending application, above mentioned, and comprises a ring-shaped burner seated in depressions which are formed in the inner base plate 8 of the oven, said base plate having an opening 9 within the area circumscribed by the ring burner. The lateral arm of the burner is also seated in a depression formed in the inner base plate 8 and extends diagonally outward and passes through an opening formed in the rear wall of the oven where it communicates with a fuel inlet and a primary air inlet.
The improved partition may be cast in one hollow piece if desired, but the preferable construction is that shown in the drawings, in which the partition comprises a pair of separate members 10 cast to the form shown in Fig.3 and secured together by a bolt 11. In its assembled-form, the partition is of U-shape and comprises a cylindrical part 12 having a pair of parallel legs 13 extending to one side therefrom and spaced apart as shown. The partition is mounted in the heat passage. '7' so that the cylindrical part 12 is located in alinement with the opening 9 of the base late 8. Theflegs 13 are disposed directly thezlat'eralarm of the gas burner, the upper edges of said legs being curved to conform to-thefdepression in the base plate 8, which forms thefiseat for the lateral arm of the burner. communicates with an" opening in the rear wall of. the oven, whichforms a secondary air inlet for the gas burner.
The valve for controlling the flow of air through the. inlet, preferably comprises a strip of'metal 14 cast to'the form shown in Fig. 4. The valve 14 is slidably mounted in guideways formediin the rearwallof the oven and is adapted to be shifted into and out of position to close the air inlet.
' The means for shifting the valve '14: comprises a rod 15 rotatably mounted in bearin'gs secured'to the side 6 ofthe stove. The
rear'end of the rod 15 is-formed to provide a crank 16 which engages a' slot-17 formed at the outer endof the valve 14'so that the I rotation of therod-will shift the valve in itsguideways. -A handle 18 is formed at the forward endv ofthe rod 15 to facilitate the rotation thereof. In the operation of the device, when the stove is burning asolid 'fuel,'the valve 14 is shifted to itsclosed position-and the heat from the fire-box passes through the heat chamber '7 'to-arsmoke flue 19 in the usual 2 way. In heat-ingJth oven bythe gas burner,
ene ath I The outer end. of the partition the valve is shifted to its open position so that a secondary supply'of air passes through the hollow partition to the gas burner;
"Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood'that numerous details-ofthe construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as following claim. v g v I claim: r
