v NAME-PLATE,
i a lication filed March 18,
To all whomithmyconcern: I v
Be it known that'I, ABRAHAM ToBIAs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man- 'hattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and'Improved Na-mePlate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in name plates, an object of the invention being to provide improved means for removably supporting letters and other characters of any sort which permits the ready assembling of any name or sign and enables the interchange of letters or characters from time to time as may be desired.
A further obj ect is to provide a name plate which can be manufactured and sold at an extremely lowprice, which will be neat and attractive in appearance, and strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of, construction, and combinations and ar rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims;
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front face view ofmyimproved name plate, partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation, partly in section, Y
Fig. 1 is'a view in transverse section; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the 7 character plates.
My improved name plate comprises a support A which is preferably of sheet metal and which is pressed or otherwise formed to provide an embossed or raised frame 1 having an integral supporting plate 2 set back from the outer face of the frame and connected to the frame by beveled walls '8 to give to the frame an ornamental appearance and to guide the character plates 1 into po- I sition and assist in holding them in such position.
The supporting plate 2 is made with longitudinal slots 5 adapted to receive rearwardly and inwardly bent flanges or tongues 6 on the character plates 4:, and a strip which constitutes a locking key, is. then lo-v cated at the rear of the supporting plate and moved longitudinally into position bei Specification Letters Patent.
7 i the support.
1920. Serial No. 366,822.
tween the flanges or tongues 6 and the rear,
face of the supporting plate effectually looking all of tl1echaracter plates to the support.
,It is to'be understood that the flanges 6 of the plates 4 are not quite as deep as the slots 5,fso that theymay be readily passed When the key 7 is rethrough the slots.
moved, the device can be turned with its face downward and the flanges will fall out of the slots.
The border or frame 1 is made with openings 8 for the reception of screws or other .Patented Oct. 12, 19 20.
securing devices 9 to secure the same to a wall or other support 10 and when these screws are in position, the strip or key 7 will be so limited in longitudinal movement that none of the character plates can fall out of the support.
The character plates 41 are preferably provided with raised letters or other characters 11 and are of such a width in comparison with their support that a sufiicient number of said plates can be assembled to form the desired name, word, or other sign.
' The letters, the support, and the keycan will all be formed of sheet metal, and hence, be extremely cheap to manufacture and the metal can be ornamentedv or surfaced in any desired way to give the desired appearance to suit the trade.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make'such changes and al-. 'terations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A name plate, comprising a support having a longitudinal slot therein, character plates on the support, flanges or tongues on the character plates positioned, through the slot in the support, the depth of said flangesbeing slightly less than the width of said slot, whereby said flanges may be readily passed through the slot, and a key at the rear of the support engaging said flanges or tongues and locking the character plates to 2. A nameplate, comprising a support having a pair of slots therein, character plates, flanges projecting rearwardly and inhence I do not limit myself to the said flanges being slightly less than the Width of said slots, whereby said flanges may be readily passed through the slots, and
a key located against the rear of the support and havlng locking engagement With said n having" flanges securing all of'the character plates to the support. 7'
3. A name plate, comprising a border or frame, a supporting plate integral with the border or frame and set inwardly therefrom, said supporting plate having longitudinal slots therein, character plates adapted to be positioned against the outer face of said supporting plate, devices on the edges of the character plates positioned through" the 3 slots, the depth of said flanges being slightly less than the Width of said slots, whereby said flanges may be readily passed throu the slots, and a strip constituting a key adapted to be moved alongitudinally of the support in 'rear thereof 'jan'dr'into locked 'engagement With said devices on the character "plates'securing the latter to the supports 7 plate comprising a support H 4. A- name parallel slots therein,--character plates on the support, flanges on the character plates, the depth of said flanges being less than the Width of said slots, Whereb said flangesimay be readily passedthrouglh saidslots, and a lockingdevice at the rear of the support adaptedvto engage saidrflanges and removably lock the character plates to the support. a ,i
