Description

S. E. BURKETT. SCRUBBING BRUSH.
APPLICATION nuao JUNE 26, 1919.
7 1,355,650. Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
I Elvweutoz amul EEmr'keTT UNITED STATES SAMUEL E. BURKETT, OF PITCAIRN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCRUBBING-IBRUSH.
Application filed June 26, 1919.
To all whom it may concern: i)
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. DURKETT,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident or" Pitcairn, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scrubbing brushes, and more particularly to brushes of the fountain type, an object of the invention being to provide a scrubbing brush particu- '-'"'ly designed for out door use, such as the ubbing oi porches, walks, garages, passenger coaches or analogous uses, whlch brush comprises a bristle carrying head to which a handle coupling is attached, the said coupling being provided with a recess adapted to communicate with the bore of a hollow handle and also providing a plurality of radially extending tubes communicating with the interior of the recess in the handle socket and extending through the back or head of the brush for supplying liquid to the bristles of the brush.
A further object of the invention is to provide liquid supplying handle structure which may no detached from a brush when the latter becomes worn out, and attached to a new brush.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved scrubbing brush.
Fig. is a section through the scrublnn brush. 7
3 is a section through the handle socket and a part of the handle connected thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 indicates the head of the brush which includes back 6, constructed of any suitable material, and having bristles 7 attached to one surface thereof, as is ordinary in the construction of scrubbing brushes. The back 6 of the brush head 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 8 extending therethrough, at spaced points and the tapered ends 9 of tubes 10 extend downwardly through these openings, opening out through the back 6 of the brush among the biastles 7. The tubes 10 extend substantially parallel to the face of the back 6 and are Specification of Letters Patent.

connected to the handle coupling 11, having communication with the recess 12 formed therein. The handle coupling 11 has an annular flange 13 formedthereon by means of which the handle coupling is attached to the back 6 of the brush at the center of the same. The recess 12 in the coupling 11 opens out, through a constricted bore 14, into the bore 15 of the handle 16 which handle; is preferably threaded or otherwise detachably connected to the coupling 11, to permit interchanging of the handle, it dcsired, to permit the use of the handles of different lengths with the brush head. Valve 17 is detachably connected to the upper end of the handle 16 and is adapted to have communication by means of a hose or other flexible conduit 18 with a supply source of water, illustrated as a hydrant, at 19 in Fig. l of the. drawing. The water,
leaving the hydrant 19 will flow through the hose 18, through the tubular handle 16 and into the recess 12 in the coupling 11, from which it will flow through the tube 10, and through the back 6 of the brush head 5 among the bristles 7, to facilitate the scrubbin of any article with the improved scrubbing brush. The flange 13 is preferably attached to the brush back by screws, as indicated at 20, so as to permit it to be easily detached from connection with the brush back, in case the bristles '1" of the brush become worn to such an extent so as to render the brush inefiicient in use and owing to the tapering of the down turned ends 9 of the tubes 10, these ends may be readily withdrawn from the back of the brush head.-
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;
I claim:
In a scrub brush, the combination, of a brush head including a back provided with a plurality of openings therethrough, a handle coupling detachably connected to said back and provided with a recess, a plurality of tubes connected to said coupling and having communication with the recess therein, said tubes having their ends remote from said handle coupling bent at angles and gradually reduced in diameter, said tubes extending into the openings in said back and projecting therethrough, and a handle connected to said handle cou lin SAMUEL E.
