UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY RANDOLPH VAN DEVENTER, 0F SUMTEE, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR T0 SPLITDORF ELECTRICAL COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED GENERATOR AND LAMP FOR MOVING VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Original application filed. May 25, 1916, Serial No. 99,856. Divided and this application filed December 11, 1917. Serial No. 206,645.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, HARRY R. VAN DE- VENTER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Generators and Lamps for Moving Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined generator and lamp for moving vehicles such as automobiles, motor cycles, bicycles and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined generator and lamp wherein the lamp case is made a part of the generator framework and said lamp is provided with a reflector and a lens or glass for protecting the same.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration, one embodiment of the invention,--
Figure 1 is view in vertical section through a combined generator lamp having my improvements applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the application of my improved device applied'to an ordinary bicycle.
In carrying out the invention I have provided an inclosedcase adapted to receive the generator and the generator is provided with a-driving shaft which may be driven in any suitable manner from a moving part of the vehicle. The lamp is mounted directly on the armature shaft and is connected directly to the winding of the armature. The inclosing case 2 is formed with a reflector having an opening through which the lamp is supported and the front of the case about the deflector is shaped so as to su port a bulls-eye lens or protecting glass.
eferring more in detail to the drawings, 1 denotes the framework or handle bars of a bicycle to which I have shown my device attached. An inclosing case 2 is secured to the handle bar by clamping members 3. Mounted in this inclosing case is a generator which includes, as herein shown, an armature 4 and field magnets 5. The armature is carried by stub shafts 6 and 7 These shafts are mounted to rotate in suitable bearings in the case. The shaft 6 is con nected to a flexible shaft 8 which is connected to a gear 9 and this gear meshes with a gear 10 carried by and rotating with the wheel 11 of the bicycle. The stub shaft 7 is formed with a central opening adapted to receive a lamp 12. The lamp 12 is connected to the winding 18 of the armature. This lamp is fixed to the shaft 7 and rotates therewith. Projecting from the inclosing case 2 is an extension 14. Clamped to the extension 14 is a plate 15. Between the extension 14 and the plate 15 is a diaphragm 16. Mounted upon the diaphragm 16 is a series of spots indicated at 17. The stub shaft 7 is provided with a toothed wheel 18 which is free to slide on the shaft but turns with the shaft. By means of a lever 19, the toothed wheel may be brought into contact with the spots 17 and cause the diaphragm to vibrate, thus producing a signal. The plate 15 is formed with openings 20. Said plate 15 also has an inwardly extending part 21 which forms a reflector for the lamp 12. The inwardly projecting part is provided with an opening sufiiciently large to receive the shank of the lamp which turns freely in the opening. Said plate ,15 is formed with an overhanging lip 22. Directly in rear of this lip 22 is a seat for the bulls-eye lens or protecting glass 23 and the lip 22 holds the same in place.
The broad combination of the lamp, the sound producing diaphragm and the generator all mounted on the inclosing case and operated from a common shaft, is shown, described and claimed in my parent application, Serial No. 99,856, filed May 25th, 1916, of which this present application is a division. The present invention is directed particularly to the construction of the re-.
flector and the manner of holding the lens or protecting glass, in combination with the inclosed case for the generator.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in 'the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A generating and lighting unit comprising a casing, a dynamo having a rotatable Q a I v r 1,355,581
, part carrying a generating coil, a bearing for said rotating part at each side of said casing, means for rotating said part, said casing having a projecting portion at one slde thereof, a reflector mounted on said projecting portion of the casing, said rotatable member having a projecting part, a lamp mounted on said projecting part, said refiector having an opening 'therethrough whereby said lamp may be disposed within the reflector and rotate with said rotatable tecting glass on said seat; the center of said In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 20 signature.
