DETACHABLE BUTTON.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Application fi1ed December 12, 1918. Serial No. 266,385.

Be it known that l, HERMAN Orrrz, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of llllinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as buttons, buckles and clasps and more particularly has reference to an improved detachable button.
As the principal object, this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character the component parts of which are designed so as to be quickly applied in position on a garment and maintained in proper position without necessitating the employment of independent securing means.
More particularly, this invention embraces the provision of a device of the above mentioned character composed of cooperative receiving and attaching members, of improved construction designed to be clamped in position on a garment and arranged in detachable engagement with each other.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other objects, as well as the characteristic features, nature and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the f0llowing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim, forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the device applied and looking toward the outer face of the attaching member,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 in the direction in which the arrows point, and
Fig. d is an elevational taching member.
Similar characters of reference are emdetail of the atployed in all of the above described views, to
indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanylng drawings, there is provided the lmproved detachable button which in the present instance may be said to consist of a receiving member generallydesignated by the numeral 1 and an attaching member indicated in its entirety by the numeral 2 and designed for engagement with a portion 3 of a garment preparatory to being engaged with the receiving member 1, the latter in turn being adapted to receive the attaching portion l of the garment or other object to be supported or received by the member 1.
The receiving member consists of a tubular body 5 internally threaded as at 6 while formed with the outer surface of the tubular body at the respective ends thereof and arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other are outwardly extending disk-like flanges 7, said flanges coacting with each other and with the body in receiving and retaining the portion 4 or the object to be supported and having their circumferential edges rounded for convenience and security in gripping the receiving member between the fingers.
The attaching member 2 consists of a head of a disk-shape from one face of which projects a concentric and threaded shank 9, the outer portion of the shank being pointed as at 10 to facilitate penetration of the shank through the portion 3 of the garment, while the threaded portion of the shank is subsequently engaged in the correspondingly threaded tubular body so that the head 8 will coact with the adjacent disk-like flanges 7 for the clamping of the button on the garment. The outer edge of the head is knurled and rounded as at 11 to facilitate turning thereof though if a very tight engagement is desired a screw driver or the like (not shown) may be engaged in the transverse kerf 12 in the outer face of the head, as is apparent. The kerf or groove 12 is of a depth approximately equal to the thickness of the head 8 and extends to the rounded edge thereof thus forming recesses in said edge at diametrically opposed points increase the security of grip when said head is grasped between the fingers, as when applying the device to use. By this construction it is believed to be apparent that when which the portion or a tight engagement of the portion 3 of the garment is effected any and all strain occasioned when a pull is exerted on the portion or object 4 will be equally distributed on the portion 3 which is clamped by the head 2 V the pointed terminal of the shank 9 to project therethrough in applying the button to comparatively thin material.
. It is believed in View of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely umiecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages-of the invention will be readily apparent. However, it is to be understood that the button may be used for supporting suspenders and in such case, the head is disposed exteriorly, preferably with the receiving portion disposed interiorly and adapted to be engaged by the button holed pad represented by the portion or object 4. incidentally, if the button is used on a coat or like garment, the receiving portion is disposed eXteriorly to receive and retain the 0ppositely disposed button holed portion of the coat, as is apparent.
Still further embodiments on the inventhe hereto appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A detachable button con'iprising a pair of separable male and female members, the
male member being formed with a head, and
a central externally threaded needle pointed shank, the female member being formed with spaced inner and outer heads and a connecting central tubular stem providing a passage opening through site sides of said female member, whereby the latter can be reversibly inserted overthe shank, and internal threads in the stem for the detachable engagement of the shank therein on the reversing of the button.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature hereto.
7 HERMAN OPITZ.
