UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. SCULLY, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
FLOOR-CLAMP.
Application filed "July 28,
T 0 all w 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. SouLLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to floor clamps for forming tight joints between floor boards while the same are being secured in place, and my object is to provide a simple, inexpensive and powerful device of this charac ter whereby a carpenter or others can force floor boards firmly against each other and hold them in such position while nailing them to the underlying floor joists.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts disclosed by Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line III-III of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention I employ a lever 1 provided at its lower portion with a yoke 2 having upturned forward ends 3 bent toward each other as disclosed on Fig. 2.
6 designates a swiveledimember connected to the sides of the yoke 2 by a bolt or pivot 8, which constitutes a fulcrum for the lever 1. Said swiveled member 6 is provided at its rear portion with a head 10 having a spur 12 at its underside.
14 designates a Y-shaped floor-engaging member operably-connected at its rear end by a bolt 16 to the upturned ends 3 of the yoke 2. The forward ends of the member 14: have alined grooves 18 to fit over the tongues A of the floor boards B, which are nailed in the usual manner to the fi oor joists C.
In practice the floor engaging member 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

is adjusted against the edge of a floor board B with the grooves 18 astride the tongue A. The lever 1 is then lowered, after which the head 10 is tapped with a hammer to force the spur 12 into the underlying joists C. The operator then pulls upwardly upon the lever 1 to force the floor-engaging member 14 firmly against the adjacent floor board and in turn forces the same tightly against the abutting board to make a tight joint between said boards. The operator then holds the lever 1 with one hand and nails the board to the joist with a hammer in the other hand, the nails having been started previous to the placement of the device in engagement with the floor board.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that I have produced a device whereby floor boards may be firmly clamped together, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the character described con sisting ofa lever having upturned lower ends, a holding member pivoted to the lever below the upturned ends and embodying a spur for engagement with a floor joist, and a board engaging member pivoted to said upturned ends and having grooved forward terminals spaced apart to permit a nail to be driven through a board and into the joist engaged by the holding member, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. SOULLY.
Witnesses:
