Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed January 22, 1919. Serial No. 272,419.
: specification.
.My invention relates to improvements in. tunnel kilns of the type generally disclosed in patent of C. Dressler, No. 1,170,428 dated Feb. 1', 1916. In the typeof kiln disclosed in such patent, the heating is effected by means of the combustion of gas and 2111'," which combustion takes place in chambers located on each side of the goods chamber of the kiln. In practice it has been found diflicult to bring, about an intimate mixture of the introduced gas .and the highly heated air 'to obtain perfect combustion, j
The object of my invention, thereforefis a construction by reason of which there shall i be a perfect intermixture of the introduced gas and the highly heated air at the time when such. gas and air is introduced into the combustion chamber.
The accompanying drawings will serve to illustrate my invention, in which:
' tion. 6,
Figure 1 is a plan section taken substantially on the line 1 -1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line I1-1I of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken the line lllll1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. at is a transverse section taken on theline 1V1V of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a kiln structure, which may be of any suitable construcbustion chambers located on opposite sides of the goods chamber. The combustion chambers 7 are each divided into two sections, 8 in which the gas and air is mixed, and 9 in which the gas and air is burned. These sections are connected together by a sleeve 10, so arranged as to permit a certain amount of longitudinal movement between sections 8 and 9.
Situated below the kiln structure is a gas flue 11, which connects through vertical fines 12 located on the outside'of each side of the furnace. Connected with the vertical fines and projecting into the sections 8 ot the combustion chambers, are burners 13'. The ends of these burners have formed in goods chamber; 7, identical com-1 them, openings 14, by reason of which the gas introduced through the burners is projected horizontally into the sections 5) of the combustion chambers. These openings are shown as horizontally disposed slits.
They may be otherwise formed. Sections 8 of the combustion chambers may be built up of brick. Located in the tops of the sections 8 are valves 15 which may be operated from the outside of the kiln by means of the projecting rods 16. Located in the bottom of the sections 8 of the combustion chambers, are fines 17 which communicate between the interior of the goods chamber 6 and the interior of the sections 8 of the combustion chambers. The openings into the combustion chambers are provided with grates 18, the purpose of these being to diffuse the heated air passing through the tines 1.7 as it enters sections .8 of the combustion chambers.
The operation of my improved construction will be readily understood. (ins from the flue 11 is introduced through the burners 13. The gas being under pressure, acts as an injector and draws air into the sections 8 through valves 1% and flue 17, until a proper mixture of gas and air is obtained. This mixture is projected through the sleeve 10 into sections 9 of the combustion chain bers, where it is burned. Further air may be introduced through the fine 22 and openings 25, and the mixture of gas and air be made to impinge upon the battle plates 24 for the purpose of more perfectly effecting a mixture.
'I wish it understood that I do not limit unyself in any wise to the precise locations of the valves or openings through which the highly heated air is introduced into the sections 8. These may be materially modified without departing in any wise from the general plan disclosed.
Having thus described my invention, 'I claim: I
1. In a tunnel kiln and in combination with the inclosing structure, combustion chambers arranged on each side of the intion, a combustion portion and an interposed sleeve, means for introducing gas and highly heated air into the mixing portion of each combustion chamber and means for projecta ing the mixed gas and air longitudinally through the corresponding sleeve into the combustion portion of the combustion v chamber.
3, In a tunnel kiln and in combination with the inclosing structure, combustion chambers arranged on each; side of the interior of the inclosing structure, said combustion chambers each comprising a mixing portion having a regulating valve and opening through which highly heated air may be introduced, a combustion portion having openings through which highly heated air may be introduced and an exit flue for the products of combustion, and a sleeve between'said mixing and combustion portions, together with means for introducing gas into themixing portion and projecting such gas and heated air from the mixing portion into the combustion portion of the combustion chamber.
4:. In a tunnel kiln and in combination with the inclosing structure, combustion chambers arranged on each side of the interior of the inclosing structure, each combustion chamber dlvided into a mixing portion and a combustion portion, a sleeve for for projecting said mixed gas and air into the combustion portion, means for checking the longitudinal movement ofthe mixed gas and air along the combustion portion,
and means for adding heated air to the mixed gas and air in the combustion portion.
5. In a tunnel kiln and in combination with the inclosing structure, combustion chambers arranged on each side of the interior of the inclosing structure, each combustion chamber divided into a mixing portion and a combustion portion connected by a sleeve, means for introducing highly heated air into the top and bottom of the mixing portion, means for introducing gas into the center of the mixing portion and projecting it longitudinally when mixed with air through the sleeve and into the combustion portion, and means for conveying the products of combustion from said combustion portion.
6. In a tunnel kiln and in combination with the inclosing structure, combustion chambers arranged on each side of the interior of the inclosing structure, each combustion chamber divided into a mixing portion and a combustion portion connected by a sleeve, means for introducing highl heated air into the top and bottom of the mixing portion, means for introducing air into the bottom of the combustion portion,
means for introducing gas into the mixing portion and projecting it with highly heated air through the sleeve into the combustion portion.
