BIRCH, citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented Ycertain new and useful Improvements in Slitting and Rewinding Machines, ot which the i'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to slitting and rewinding' machines.
In the art of slittingy and rcwinding sheet material a successful type of machine ein#` bodies the mechanism shown in Patent llo. 1,076,189, in which a pair ot rewindinr rolls supports the rewound coils and cooperates with a third roll engaging the upper periphery of the coils to rotate the coils and there'- by perform the rewinding operation. in this ,type ot machine one of the rewinding rolls on which the rewound coils are supported is utilized also as a cutter roll and for this purpose is provided with a shell made up of cylindrical sections having' a glass-hard surface. Because of the great ditlieulty of uniformly and properly harden ing the surface ot a section having` a large diameter, it has been found necessary to restrict as tar as possible the diameters oi' the sections. l/Vith the development oi the art, however, a point has been reached in 'which a cutter roll having a diameter small enough to comply with the limitations oi' the hardening' process can not be used as a supportingr roll for the rewound coils because of its tendency to bend under the weight of the coils and thereby interfere with both the slitting' and the rewinding operations. in the cri-pending' application Serial No. 146,569 there is shown a construction oi' slitting` and rewindingr machine in which a cutter roll ot relatively small diameter is provided, which does not engage the rewound coils, but, instead, is mounted in the tramework of the machine beneath a pair of rewinding' rolls of relatively large diameter.
The main object of this invention is to provide means for so mounting' the cutter roll in the body of the machine that access can be had thereto to remove 'or replace the roll in whole or in part without dismantling; the machine framework.

In the particular embodiment of the invention disclosed, coil supporting rewinding rolls ot relatively large diameter are employed a nd, in lieu ot adapting' one of these rolls to serve also as a critter roll, a special cutter' roll is provided, as in application Serial No. 146,569, which` serves only as a cutter roll and takes no'part in the rewinding operation. The cutter roll is preferably mounted beneath'and intermediate the rewinding' rolls with its ends journaled within the boundaries of the heavy framework of the machine and, in order to provide access to the cutter roll tor any purpose, such as the replacement of the roll in whole or in part vithout dismantling' the machine framework, one ot the frame members in et the cutter roll shaft is constructed to eX- tend beyond the framework oi' the machine;

The coil supporting rolls l and 2 are rotated in the same direction and cooperate with a driven top rewinding roller 6, rotating in the same direction and bearing against the upper surface of the rewound coils 3, to rotate the interposed coils. The roller 6 is preferably journaled in carriages i' that are adapted to move upwardly along the vertical guide members 8 in accordance with the increase in size et' the rewound coils.

Temporary supporting' means fior the cutter roll, such as lifting jacks, can be made use of l'or sustaining the weight of the roll While the bearing' member 256 or the ring` sections 9' are beinpr removed.
Advantage is taken of the tact that the cutter roll l() is mounted directly beneath the top rewinding' roller o, to provide driving connections through which the roller o can be driven directly from the cutter roll shaft. Fory this purpose the cutter roll shaft extends beyond `the irameworlc ot themachine as 'is indicated at 58 in Fig. 2 ot the dra-Whig.
