Description

M. MULLER HAIR WAV] APPLICATON man IAN. x4,1
Patented Sept. 48, 1920.
A TTOREZQ uarrsn STATES PATENT OFFICE KVIAX IJIULLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-HAVING.
Application certain new and useful improvements in the part of'waving natural hair on the head whereby hair is permanently waved in a sidewise direction to cause the hair to lie flat on the head of the wearer in perfect Marcel wave fashion. Anotherobject is to prevent the hair from becoming kinky or curly. Another bbjectistoprevent the hair irom becoming overheated and injured dur- 111 the process of waving the bail:
li'ith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specilicatiom in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all ihe views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the waving tool with a strand of hair wound upon the same;
Figure 2 is a sectional plan View of the electric heater with the waving tool, the hair wound thereon and the protecting wrapper in position in the heater, the section being on the line 22 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 4 is a face View oi one oi the strands of hair after being wound and set and prior to being wetter! and con'ibed but; and
Fig. is a side elevation oi the waved hair as it appears on the owners head;
The apparatus for producing the desired hair waving consists essentially of a waving- .tool on which a strand of hair 11 is wound, as hereinafter more fully explained,
a wnpper 12 of asbestos or a similar material inc-losing the hair while wound on the tool 10, and an electric heater 13 open at the ends for receiving the wrapper 12 and the parts contained therein, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2. The waving tool 10 is preferably made of a metal rod bent into U shape to provide side members 15 and 16 extending parallelly and connected with Specification of Letters Patent.

each other by a bend 17, preferably covered with a covering 18 of asbestos or other suitable heat insulating material. The strand 11 is wound on the side members 15 and 16 of the waving tool 10 by passing the strand adjacent the head of the subject, first, between the two side bars 15 and 16, then around one of the bars (as shown, the bar 15) then between the bars and around the other bar 16, after which the winding as above described is repeated with the windings pushed close together, as plainly indirated in Fig. 1. The side bars 15 and 16 of the waving tool 10 are sufliciently long to accommodate practically an entire strand of hair. In practice each strand is comparatively thick so that it requires about six strands for waving the hair on the head of the subject.
The heater 12 comprises an inner metallic shell 2.0, an outer metallic shell 21 and heads 22 and 23 extending between the shells at the ends thereof and being securely soldered or otherwise fastened to the same thus providing an annular chamber 24: intermediate the shells. In this chamber 24 is arranged a shell of mica or a similar insulating material aroiind which is wound a resistance coil 26 of wire having its ends provided with an insulation'and forming a cord extending through the head 23 to connect by a suitable plug'with a socket connected with a source of electrical nergyfor conducting a current of electricity through the resistance coil 26 to render the latter incandescent and thus heat the heater 13. In practice the resistance coil 26 is arranged to produce heat of a desired degree and one that is suilicient to properly set the hair without danger of burning, singeing or otherwise injuring the hair wound upon the waving tool 10 and held within the heater, as above explained. In practice it takes about twenty -minutes to properly set the hair and by using a low heat for a comparatively long time the desired waving effect and nent setting of thc hair is produced.
In order to properly hold the heater and the parts contained therein in position on the head of the subject use is made of a handle 30 of wood or similar materialand attached to the top of the heater 13 approximately at t e middle thereof. The upper endof the andle 30 is provided with an eye 31 to which is secured a rope. cord or other flexible connection 32 extending over permastrandextends in a: serpentine line in a sidecounterweight 35 for 5 heater and the 3 erimped but is '33 abut against the guide pulleys 33, 34 attached to a ceiling or ther overhead support. The end of the flexible connection ,32 is provided with a counterbalancing the parts mounted therein to hold the same suspended on the subjects head Without exerting a pull on the hair. It will be noticed that the casing 18 adjacent the roots of the hairs of the strand is free to side of the head of the subject Without danger of burning the same aslthe said covering is not liable to be unduly heated by the heated Waving tool 10.
After, the lapse of about twenty minutes tlieelectricity. isturned oli and the heater 13 is disengaged from the Wrapper 153 and then the latter is taken oii after which the' tool 10 is withdrawn from the strand of hair 1- 1. The strand'of hair new assumes the position shown'in Fig. i that is, time wise direction, namely, in a plane approxr mately parallel to that of the surface of the head of the subject. This strand is now moistened and combed out whereby a genuine Marcel Wave effect is produced. It will be noticed. that by the arrangement described the hairis not lainlred, curled or given a serpentine or a Wavy appearance with each hair extending in a member to arrange plane approximately parallelto the surface of thehead of the subject it will also be noted that the hair is not overheated or jured during the process of waving the hair especially as the temperature of the heater is comparatively low and the hair is protected by the Wrapper 12 of asbestos or similar material.
Having, thus described my invention, 3 claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent In an apparatus for Waving natural hair on the head, a Waving tool of an approxi mately lJ-shape and upon the side members of which a strand or hair of the head is adapted to be Wound by passing the hair repeatedly around one side member, then between the members and around the other the hair in a sidewise extending serpentine line, and a tubular covering of a heat insulating-material covering the bend of the said Waving tool and terminating at its ends at the side members of'the tool to hold the hair off this end of the Waving tool, the said covering being adapted to abut against the side of the head of the user to protect the head against beingburned by the heated tool MAX IVIULLER.
