Description

G. P. WARTCHOW.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA S.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA o.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. WARTCHOW, OF MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA.
SADDLE FOR MAINS.
Application filed MarchrZB, 1920.
To ail 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WARTCHOW, a citizen orn the United States, residing at Minot, in the county of Ward, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Saddles for Mains; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to mali-e and use the saine.
This invention relates to water distribution, and more especially to mains and pipes; and the object of the same is to produce a saddle which will protect the service cock and will serve as a support for the pipe or casing through which a key may be inserted to close the cock. i
Vhen .it is desired to lead a service pipe from a .main into a house or other point where water or gas is to be used, the main is tapped (usually in the side) and a service cock screwed into the hole and closed, and from this cock the Service pipe is led and is later connected with the plumbing of gas system, the service pipe having itsown cutoil' cock within the dwelling. This service cock in cities is usually at or near the curb line and issuimounted by a curb box having a cover at the ground level, so that the authorities may lift the cover and insert al key and close the cock to cut o the water at a point as near the main -as possible. In
smaller cities and towns the inain may not be so deep and the corporation cock 1s not always so well protected, and it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a Y device in the nature of a saddle'which can be clamped over the main and which has one end'shaped so as to protect this cock, as the device will sustain a considerable load in case the same should be thrown upon it by vehicles passing over the main, perhaps when the soil was soft.
Details are set forth below and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from what might be called the front side of the main showing the entire structure in place.
F ig. 2 is a perspective view from the rear side, the upper portion of the casing being broken away and the key shown ready to be inserted.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the saddle inverted.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920. serial N. 368,058.
Fig. l is a sectional detail showing the service cock tapped into the main.
' The letter M designates in the present instance a water main, and C is a service cock which has been tapped into one side of the same and from which is to be led a service pipe as indicated in Fig. 1 at P.
his invention consists primarily of a saddle havinot a body 1 cut out or arched on its under side so as to lit closely over the upper half of a main of that size to which it is adapted, its rear end being carried down in a single leg ortoe 2 having a set screw 3 which can be tightened up against the main, and its front end being carried down and forked so as to produce arms 1l spaced suhciently to straddle the cock C without touching the same. These arms are substantially triangular in side view, and are connected by a web 5 i'iorming a continuation of the body, which web and the arms collectively constitute `a three-sided inclosure for the cock and the parts above it. The web carries an u pstanding sleeve (i, and into this sleeve is inserted the lower end of a pipe 7 which is secured within the sleeve as by lead packing 8, calking, or a screw joint.l Over the upper end of the pipe 7 is slipped another pipe 9, preferably having a cap 10 at its top which will stand at or near the level of the ground.
No novelty is claimed for the cock C, but as usual it is of the globe-valve type, its plug having a web 11 across its upper end. key stem 12 is disposed between the'arms 4, transversely notched as at its lower end at 13 to fit over said web, and preferably held thereon by means of a pin 15 passing Aacross the stem and through the web. The body of the stein rises through the casing and its sleeve, and may be squared at its upper end as shown at 16. In F ig. 2 is shown the ordinary key 17 consisting of a long shank with a handle at its upper end and a head 18 at its lower end having a squared socket to lit on the squared end 16 of the key stein.
In the use of this device, the ground is dug away down to the main, the latter tapped and the cock inserted and closed, and
the service pipe led away from the cock. The key stem is now applied and fastened to the web of the cock. The saddle is next put in place over the key stem, its arms passed down astride the cock, and the set screw in its toe tightened. Now the casing weight. 40
Ywith the system' in the latter.
is inserted within the sleeve 6 and calked,
screwed or packed atv8, the casing rising to a point about level with thevground, and its cap l() applied. Thereafter the excavation can be filled in and tamped, and later theY plumber can lead'the service pipe P to the cutoff valvein the dwelling, and connect it When the dwelling is ready for occupancy, the city or town authorities open the Vcock C and the fluid begins to Tlow. It now at any time, by reason oi the failure of the'hou'se owner to 'ipay his water bill, or on ac'coimt of scarcity 'o'f water 'in thesupply system, leakage in'the service pipe, orV for 'any other reason where the action o'f thel cut-'o'ii valve in the house would not be suiiici'ent, it bevcomes'necessary or desirable to cut 'off the iiow-oi vaft'erV as near 'the main as possible, the cap 10 is removed and a key "17 is 'run down through the casing unti'l`its head 18 engages the squared upper end '1'6 oi' the key stein, and when the latter is turned for a quarter revolution the cock is closed. li the leak or 'other diiiculty had been at a point quite near themai'n or cock, the water could thus be 'cut off' from the surface without the necessity of digging down through the 'wet ground and against the upward iiow of Vthe leaking 'water (or gas), so that the advantage of cutting off the low before opening up 'the ground at all is obvious. But in the ordinary use of the device, the presence of thesadd'le oifer -the main and with its arms astride the key stemand cock, aiiords a Vprotection for 'these parts of lthe water system, because'the saddle if properly made and applied 'will` sustainv a very heavy Aliso its sleeve 6 aiords a support for the casing through whichthe key is to VbeV inserted, whether said casing is at the y curb line or not orowhet'her it rises compietel'y tothe surface or not. yThe structure will be by preference 'made of rough casting', and in sizes adapted to mains of various gage.
That is claimed as new is:
1. The hereinV described saddle for mains comprising a casing arched Ao n its under side to tit over the main and having a single toe at one end and spaced arms at the other yend, ai Web connecting the upper end 'of said arms and with them forming a cavity, anda set vscrew threaded inward through said toe.' Y
2. The herein described saddle for mains comprising a casing arched on its under side to tit over the main and having a single toe at one end and spaced arms at the other end, a web connecting the upper endof said arms and with them formingV a cavity, a sleeve rising from said web, and means through 'said toe for clamping the saddle on the main. H
'3. rthe combination with a main, and a cock tapped into one side of the same; of
a saddle whose body is arched to it over the end Ufor tightening the saddle in place.
t. 4rThe combination withv a main, and a cock tapped into one side of the same and having a web at the upper end of its plug; of a saddle arched to iit over the'niain and forked'at one end to stand astride said cock, the top of theV fork having an'upstanding sleeve, a vcasing'rising from the sleeve and adapted to permit the insertion o-f a key, and a key stem secured to said plug and rising through said sleeve and Imade"angularat its upper end Afor vengage-ment by said key.
45. The combination with a main, a cock in one side 'of the same, and an upright key stern connected with its plug and rising above the main and squared; of a vsaddle whose body `extends -across the ma'in and lis arched on its lower 'side to fit over thesame. one end of the `body havingdepending arms spaced to stand astride [sa-id key stem and cock, `a web'connecting the upperendsfof said arms, ya sleeveV rising from said'web around the stem, a set `screw thro-ugh the'ether end of the saddle I'against lthe main opposite said cock, tubular casing packed into the sleeve and rising therefrom to a'vpoint near the
