TRUCK-BODY.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in truck bodies.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved truck body which may be shipped in the knock-down and set up by one not especially skilled or trained for the work. 7
Second, to provide an improved truck body which is very strong and rigid and at the same time one which is economical to manufacture. V
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a'preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail plan view of a truck body embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a detail horizontal section through one of the corners on a line cor responding to line 2-2 of Fig. III.
Fig. III is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 11.
Fig. IV is a detail transverse section on a line corresponding to line i4= of Fig. I.
Fig. V is a front elevation of one of the side pockets.
Fig. VI is a detail view partially in section showing details of the bed pieces.
Fig. VII is a perspective view of one of the bed piece saddles.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little 0 arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide the side sills 1 and an end sill 2 having a mitered joint. These sills are disposed on their sides and are rabbeted on their inner ed es at 3 to receive the deck boards 4.

and stake pockets 5. As these corner irons are duplicates, the description of one will sufiice. The corner irons consist of top plates 6 which rest on the upper sides of the side and end sills 1 and are provided with marginal or outer flanges 7 and the angular inner flanges 8 which embrace the edges of the sills. The corner irons are secured to the sills by the bolts 9 and 10, the bolts 10 being arranged at the ends of the corner irons while the bolts 9 are arranged at the ends of the sills.
The bolts 9 engage the tie plate 11 which is disposed on the under side of the sills to overlap their joint. The ends of the inner flange 8 extend between the outer flange to provide attaching ears 12. Filler bars 13 are arranged on the edges of the sills to overlap these attaching ears. The edge or wear straps 14 are arranged over the filler bars. The bolts 15 are arranged through these straps, the filler bars, the attaching ears and the sills, securing these filler bars and straps, and further securing the sills and corner irons together. The ends of the filler bars and the straps 14 abut the corner irons as shown in Fig. II.
The cross walls 16 extend between the flanges to form the stake pockets 17 The side stake pockets 18 are provided with attaching ears 19, the stake pockets being arranged on the edges of the side sills 1 and secured by the bolts 20 which pass through the filler bars 13 and edge straps 14 which overlap these attaching cars 19 and abut the stake pockets as shown. This provides a very effective means of retaining the stake pockets and projecting parts on the truck body are eliminated.-
The deck is supported by the cross pieces 21 carried by the longitudinal bed pieces 22. These bed and cross pieces are connected by saddles 23 provided with the spaced arms 24: embracing the bed pieces 22 and the spaced arms 25 embracing the cross pieces, the parts being secured by bolts 26 arranged through the arms and the parts embraced thereby. This provides a very rigid connection for these parts and enables their being assembled by a workman without especial skill or equipment.
The joint of the side and end sills may be mitered as illustrated which is easily formed, the corner irons forming a rigid connection for the parts. It is customary to provide rabbeted joints for the side and end sills body being made by :the user to avoidthe disproportionate expense of shipment. My improved knock-down bodies may, however, be compactlyar'ranged so thatthe'seshipping objections'are overcome.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in one of the forms in whichI 1 have'embodied. the same in practice.- I
have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relatesto embody or adapt the same as may be desired. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is the sills.
1. 2. In a structure of the class described,

In a structure Ofthe' class described, the combination of-side andend sills, acorn bined stake pocket and corner iron comprising a top plate having anouter flange at its edge and an angled innenflange embracing the edges of the sills with the topplate resting thereon, thereibeing cross members between said flanges coacting therlewith'to provide stake pockets, and bolts disposed vertically through said'top plate and sills.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of sideand endsills, a corner iron provided with a stake pocket and comprising a top plate having aflange embracing the edges of the sills, bolts disposed vertically through said top plate and sills, filler bars disposed on thev edges of the sills to overlap the ends of said flange, edge straps arranged over said filler bars with their ends abutting the corner iron, and bolts disposed horizontallythrough said 1 straps, filler bars,'flange and sills --7. In a structure of the class described, the combination of Side and end sills having a mitered joint, acorner iron'provided with a stake pocket and comprising a top plate having a flange embracing the edges of the sills, bolts disposed verticallythrough said top plate and sills, a tie plate on the under side of said sills overlapping the joint thereof'fand receiving bolts disposed at the ends of the sills, and bolts disposed horizontally through said flange and sills.
8. In a structure of the class described, the combination of side and end sills having a mitered joint, a corner iron provided with a stake pocket and comprising a top plate having a flange embracing the edges of the sills, bolts disposed Vertically through said top plate and sills, a tie plate on the under side of said sills overlapping the joint thereof and receiving bolts disposed at the ends of the sills, and bolts disposed horizontally through said flange and sills.
