WALTER R. OOLTON, OF SYRACUSE NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVING-BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,409, dated February 4, H573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. OoLToN, of Syracuse, in the county ofOnondaga and State of New York, have invented an Improved Driving-Belt, of which the following is a specitication:
This invention relates to an improved construction of V-shaped drivin g-belts for grooved pulleys; and consists in a jointed iron belt with wooden lugs attached that engage with the groove of the pulley, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a side view of a short piece of the belt; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 1also showing the pulley in section. Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications in the construction of details.
Similar letters of reference indicate parts in the separate figures.
The body of the belt is made up of flat sections or links A A, that are hinged or pivoted together at B B by pivots b b. A wooden lug, G, is firmly secured to each link by a band of iron, 0, passed around it; the ends of the band passing through the link and secured on the opposite side by jam-nuts, as shown, so that the retainingband 0 can be tightened readily, and can also be slackened at any time and'the blocks of wood renewed when they have become worn. The retaining-bands 0 can be riveted into the links for greater simplicity, and cut offfor removing them; or they may be cast of malleable iron, with eyes for straining keys, as shown in Fig. 4:. The pivots b b can also be dispensed with by casting the links of malleable iron with tongues c, Fig. 3, that are.
bent into corresponding eyes inf, the opposite ends of the links.
By these means I obtain a belt that is ,durable and strong, and can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
I am awarethat jointed belts, with V-shaped sections have been made and therefore 1 do not claim this construction broadly, but
I claim 1. A jointed belt, composed of flat metallic sections A, each provided with a V-shaped wooden block, 0, rigidly attached, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the metallic sections A, wooden blocks 0, and adjustable bands'c, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
W'ALTER 1t. OOLTON.
