LUBRCATOR APPLICATION FILED OCT. 13. I919.

UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ELMERITROST, OF MUSKEGON 'HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN.
- L'UBRIcAron.
Application file d October 13, 1919. Serial No. 330,465.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER Fnosr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskeon Heights, in the county of Muskegon and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ng drawings. j
This inventionrelates to lubricators, an d has for its object to provide a device of this character which permits a discharge of lubricant from the cup or reservoir into a chamber on the intake stroke of the engine and permits the discharge of the lubricant from the chamber to the parts to be lubri cated during the compression firing and exhaust stroke of the engine.
Another object is to provide a cup to which an outlet member is connected, the outlet member including a chamber having a valve seat in its lower portion and an ad justable valve seat in its upper portion which alternately cooperate with the valve to permit the discharge of lubricant from the cup to the chamber and from the chamber to the engine.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation and sectlonal View of the lubricator showing the valve mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates an outlet member having a threaded stem 6 adapted to be inserted in the engine. A bore 7 extends through the outlet member and is enlarged at its upper portion to provide the chamber 8. The merging portion of the chamber 8 and bore 7 includes a valve seat 9. The upper end 10 of the outlet member 5 has its outer surface threaded and reduced to provide an annular shoulder 11. Engaged with the threads and shoulder of the end 10 is a supporting disk 12 having an annular flange 18. This disk is intended to support the cup or reservoir 14, the upper end of which is closed by a cover 15.
The end 10 of the outlet member 5 has its interior surface 16 threaded and adapted to receive an adjustable bushing 17 The bottom of the bushing 17 is provided with a recess 18 having inclined walls which serve as a valve seat 19. A plurality of passages 20 extend through the adjustable bushing 17 and communicate with the cup 14 and chamberS. Extending from the upper portion of the adjustable bushing 17 is a rod 21 which extends through the cover 15 of the cup and is provided with an adjusting head 22.
Slidably disposed in the chamber 8 is a valve 23 having its upper and lower ends beveled to conform to the valve seats 9 and 19. Extending through the valve 28 longitudinally thereof is a plurality of passages 2 the upper ends of which are closed by the valve seat 19 while the lower ends are closed by the valve seat 9 in the operation of the lubricator. The lower portion of the valve 23 is reduced to provide an annular recess 25 in which an expansion spring 26 is mounted. This spring is intended to force the valve into engagement with the valve seat 19.
In operation, on the intake stroke of the engine, the suction caused by the intake moves the valve 23 downwardly against the tension of the spring 26 and causes the lower end of the passages 24 to be closed by contact with the valve seat 9. During this operation, the valve is moved away from the valve seat 19, thereby permitting the discharge of lubricant from the cup, through the passages 20 and into the passages 8 of the valve. On the compression, firing and exhaust of the engine, the resistance to the spring 26 having been removed, it causes the valve to move upwardly and engage the valve seat, thereby closing the upper ends of the passages 8 and permitting the oil previously admitted to the passages 8 to be discharged through the bore '7 to the parts to be lubricated. The adjustable bushing permits the size of the chamber to be increased or decreased to regulate the quantity of oil to be discharged without adjusting or interfering with the oil passages in the bushing and valve. It also permits all of the oil in the cup to be discharged, as the bushing can be adjusted or moved into the chamber, as shown in Fig. 1 so as to drain the oil re maining in the bottom of the cup.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A lubricator comprising a cup, an out let member for said cup, said outlet member having a chamber, said chamber including a valve seat in one end, a bushing including a valve seat, said bushing being disposed within and forming the other end of the chamber and having passages communicatingwlth the cup a-nd the chamber, a rod carried by Y said bushing and projecting abovethe top of the cup, said bushing being adjustable by the rod to increase or decrease the size of the'chamber, a valve in said I passages extending longitudinally thereof,
chamber, said valve having a plurality of means for urging one end of said valve into engagement with the valve seat of said bush ing, and potential means for urgingfthe other end of the valve 1nto engagement with the valve seat of the chamber.
'2. A lubricator comprising a cup, an out let member for said cup, said outlet member having a chamber, said chamber including a valve seat in one end, a bushing adjustably mountedin the chamber and forming the other end thereof, said bushing having a valve seat in its lower surface and having a recess at the base of the valve seat and passages communicating. with the recess and the cup, manually operable means carried by the bushing for adjusting said bushing to increase or decrease the length of the chamber,
a valveinj said chamber, said valve having a pluralityof grooves, the upper end of said signature. 1 a
