v Beit known that I, GEORGE H. TABnR, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and *State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Muffleraof which the following is a specification.v
This invention relates to improvements in muiiiers for. gas engines, etc., and the object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple form of muflier containing in its preferable embodiment, two main parts secured together on longitudinal lines and having clamped between them the bale plates usually employed for muifling the sound and absorbing the explosions.
With thisY object in view, my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and then definitely claimed. y

Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals: My muffler comprises two main parts 1 and 2, each of which may be a casting and one a substantial counterpart of my invention, the'castings 1 and -2are provided with interior bosses 5 and 6 which project toward and meet each other, a fillister screw '7 being employed to'firmly secure the parts together, as illustrated in Fig. 3, a lock washer 9 being employed under the head of said screw 7. The castings 1 and 2 mayalso be provided with ears 8 and 10, bolts 12 and 14 being employed to firmly secure these ears together, lock washers 13 being employed to hold the nuts on said bolts. The inlet end of the muffler is provided with two reduced portions 16 and 18 between which the exhaust pipe from the engine is clamped when the aforesaid bolts 12 and 14 are screwed home. The exhaust end of the muiller is also provided with two In the most desirable form Vthe short pipe 24 at the rear end of the muilier, as said parts 2O and 22 are secured together by said iillisterV screw 7. The interior of the castings 1 and 2 contains baffle plates 26, 28 and 30 of any desirable number, three being illustrated in Fig. 2. These baffle plates may be provided with the usual openings in staggered relation with each other commonly found in baiiie plates of mufliers. The interior surfaces of the castings 1 and 2 are provided with ribs 33 and 34` leaving groovesbetween them and also with lugs 36 and 38, the ribs being preferably on the sides and the lugs on the top and bottom.
I desirey to call particular attention to these ribs and lugs. They are somewhat of saw-teeth shape and are purposely so cast that the grooves in them are slightly less in diameter than the interior diameter of the castings. In other words, the bottom of the groove in said saw-tooth ribs and lugs is not flush with the inside contour of thecastings, but is about an eighth of an inch above the same. This serves two purposes as lfollows: first, it provides slight spaces between the disks and the inside contour of the castings, between the ribs and lugs, to allow a certain percentage of the gases to pass therethrough, and, second, the disks are caused to buckle slightly thus having a spring to keep the disks tight.
The construction of my muffler is so simple that it is believedno description of its operation is necessary except to state that the gases from the engine as they enter the muiiler strike first against the first baffle plate, and then are broken up, part passing through the openings thereof and part pass ing through the slight spaces between the edges of the baiile and the interior wall of the castings, and then the gases meet the second baiile and, after being again broken up, strike the third baffle, and after passing this, the gases meet the interior lugs 5 and 6, which divide the interior of the muffler.I and deflect the gases so as to compel them to divide and pass around said lugs 5 and 6, thus still further reducing the sound, before the gases finally pass out of the discharge of the muler.
