GEORGE W. GRAVES, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GRAVES SUPPLY COM- PANY, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
sroVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pmtgntd SQP@ 21, 19%@5 Application filed January 17, 1917. Serial No. 142,819.
Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which thev following is a specification.
This invention relates to stovesfand consists in certainimprovements in the con. struction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the invention relates to a stove mounted in the form vof a cabinet for use in connection with what. is commonly termed "light-housekeeping. Here it is desirable to have the stove so arranged that it may be used if desired and yet so housed as in appearance to form an article of furniture. It is also desirable to protect the surroundingr walls and form such safety locks with relation to the valves and the housing as to make the stove safe in use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure l shows a plan view of the stove, the cover being open.
Fig. 2 a front view of the stove.
Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
1 marks the base of the cabinet. In this there is formed a receptacle 2 with the front doors 3. This is ordinarily formed of wood or of material imitating wood and is used for the storage of cooking utensils.
A stove rest or receptacle 4 is formed in the top of the cabinet. This has the side walls 5 which extend upwardly at the ends of the stove and at the sides of the cabinet, the back 6 which extends upwardly to the top of the stove formed ordinarily by a continuation' of the back of the cabinet and a bottom frame 7 at the top of the receptacle 2. The bottom frame 7 and sides 5 and 6 are ordinarily formed of wood and a metal plate 8 forms the bottom which eX- tends up at 9 over the sides and back, the metal being carried by a iiange 10 over the top and front edges of the sides and back, thus thoroughly protecting the exposed parts from any flame from the stove.
The stove as shown is in the form of an ordinary hot plate made up ofthe frame 11, grid 12, burners 13, mixers 14, valves 15 and manifold 16. This is of the common commercial construction. y
A cover 17 is mounted on the back 6 by means of hinges 18. The cover has the lip 19 which, when thecover is closed, forms a closure for the front of the receptacle 4, thus entirely housing the hot plate. Braces 2() are arranged at the ends of the cover and are of the ordinary construction for locking the cover in open position. The top of the cover' has the openings 21 which afford ventilation for the receptacle 4 when the cover isclosed and the hot plate is still warm from use. The `sides 5 terminate slightly below the top of the hot plate or stove and the cover has the edges 17a to complete the inclosure when the cover is closed. The ends of the hot plate frame are left open or form a space 11n through which the h ot gases or flame may pass if the open' ing through the grid is entirely closed by the receptacle. The entire protection of the wood at this point by the metal 10 becomes by reason of this of considerable importance.
Tt is desirable to compel a closure of the valves in order to close the cover. Valve handles 22. when open are so positioned as to bein the path of a rib 23 on the inside of the lip 19 so as to prevent a closure of the cover until the valves are closed. An additional lock is also provided at the hinge which not only prevents the closure of the cover until the closing of the valve but also prevents the closing of the cover or moving downward of the cover with the valves open, thus preventing the bringing of the cover into contact with the flames. This is made up as follows: A pin 24 is slidingly mounted in the openings 25 in the back 6. This forms bolts which engage the lower edge of the cover and prevent the cover swinging with the bolt in the upper position as shown in Fig. 3. Rods 26 are secured to levers 27 con nected with the valve handle 22. These rods are bent to form cams 28 which ride on the supports 29. l/Vhen the cover is open, the lever 27 is swung so as to move the rod rearwardly and the cams operating on the supports 29 lift the rear ends of the rods so as to throw the bolt 24 upwardly to a position locking the cover open. When the valve is closed the rods 26 are moved for` wardly allowing therear end to drop down as the cam rides down on the support 29 thus retracting the bolts 24 and permitting a free swinging movement of the cover.
Tt will be noted that the plate 8 forms a top to the cabinet or receptacle 2 as well as a bottom to the recess carrying the stove. rllhere is some heat communicated from the burners through this metal plate to lthe upper part of the receptacle and in 'some instances this is desirable.
It will be noted that the supply pipe running from the manifold is carried to the rear or the cabinet entirely within the cabinet so that there is no exposure indicating the nature of the article of furniture.
lt will be noted that the frame of the stove is secured to the side walls 5, the frame having the downwardly extending lugs llh which are secured to these sides Jr'or this purpose. This not only makes a rigid mounting for the stove frame but strengthens the walls of the cabinet.
YWhat claim as new is l. lin combination with a gas stovecornprising a burner, a frame and a valve., of a Lener/4e cabinet in which the stove is housed comprising a hinged cover adapted to expose the top of the stove when opened and 'to inclose the stove when closed; and means cooperating with the valve preventing the closing of the cover with the valve in open position comprising a lock at the hinge and a connection between the lock and the valve.
2. ln combination with a gas stove Corn` prising a burner, a frame and a valve, oi' a cabinet in which the stove is housed comprising a hinged cover adapted to expose the top of the stove when opened and to inclose the stove when closed; a supply pipe arranged within the cabinet when closed; valves on the supply pipe; and means preventing the closing of the cover with the valves in open position.
ln testimony whereof li have hereunto set .f1
my hand.
