V QFFIC JOHN ADAM DICE, 0F ESPANOLA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO DOUGLAS HARVEY PARKER, OF ESPANOLA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FOLDING IRONING-IBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21,
Application filed Apri1 28, 1919. Serial No. 293,227.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ADAM DICE, of the town of Espanola, county of Sudbury, Province of Ontario. Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding ironing boards, and the object of my invention is to construct an ironing board which can be used in connection with tables or other supports of different heights above the floor, and the invention comprises a board, having an open slot at one end thereof, through which extends the leg which is pivoted to said board; an adjustable foot carried bythe lower end of the leg, whereby the length of the leg can be altered as required, and a suitable brace or support whereby the leg is braced from said board, as hereinafter more particularly set forth. v
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ironing board, certain parts being shown in section. This View also shows, in elevation, a suitable support towhich'the ironing board is clamped, and Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2 2, Fig. l on an enlarged scale.
In the drawings, like characters of reference refer to the same parts.
A is the ironing board, and the same is provided at its inner end with a longitudinal slot B in which operates the leg 0, which is pivoted to the members D of the board A by the pin or bolt E. The head F of the leg C, in connection with the slotted end of the board A, forms a jaw, whereby the ironing board is clamped to any suitable member G, such as a table top. Of course, the leg C rests upon the floor, and to brace this leg properly I provide a slotted brace or support H, which is pivoted at I to one of the members D. A threaded bolt J is held in the leg C and extends through the slot 2 of the support H, and by means of the nut 3, mounted on said bolt, the desired coactipjn is. had between the support H and the le In order to permit my ironing board to be used with supports that vary in height above the floor, I provide the leg 0 with an ad justable foot 4, which is coupled to the leg proper by means of a bolt 5, which is held.
in the extension 6 of said'foot, and the leg C and extends through the slot 7 formed in theleg CL A wing nut 8 mounted on the bolt 5 permits of the clamping together.
of the extension 6-and the leg C, so as to hold the foot 4 in adjusted position, for" be held in proper position to co-act withthe leg C proper.
7 By nails 11, or equivalent means, the flanges 10 are secured to the lower end of the leg C and the plate 9 is secured by any suitable means such as nails 12 to said leg.
The leg C and foot 4, when not in use. are designed to fold between the members D, as is also the support H, and, therefore.
the ironing board can be shipped in very compact form. and readily stored away in the house. I
Portion of the inner side of one ofthe members D is cut away as shown at 13, so as to allow for the housing of the nut 3 when the leg 0 is folded. 7 Of course, obvious changes may be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. What I claim as my invention is: p In combination with an ironing board having a supporting leg pivoted thereto and one end extended through and beyond said board, said extended portion of the leg cooperating with the board to form a clamping means, the opposite end of said leg having its upper side cut away, a U-shaped plate secured by its web portion to theterminal of said cut-away end of the leg, the arms of said plate embracing andsecured to the opposite sides ofsaid leg, an adjustable extension slidably mounted on the cutaway portion of said leg and located between the arms of said plate, said arms forming guides to prevent lateral movement for said extension and relative to said legs, and means for holding said extension in dif ferent adjusted positions relative to the leg.
JOHN ADAM DICE.
