COMBINED PAIL AND SPRINKLER.
Application filed February 20, 1918 Serial No. 218,281.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNETT WJGROVEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Petersburg, in the county of 'Pinellas and State of Florida, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Combined Pails and Sprinklers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in combined pails and sprinklers and particularly to that type used in spraying flowers or the like and is so constructed as to permit it to be readily converted into a pail for other purposes. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a pail equipped in its bottom with a novel valve which controls the flow of water from the pail during its passage therefrom. I
Another object of this invention is to provide a pail equipped with a novel sprinkler head which may be readily detached to form the pail into a filling device capable of filling radiators or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pail. equipped in its bottom with a sleeve in which is movably mounted a valve and having a sprinkler head adapted to be secured to or removed from the sleeve when desired, the valve being equipped with means for automatically controlling the flow of water from the pail to the sprinkler head.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combined pail and sprinkler of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in con struction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view,'the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim hereto appended. f

It is to be understood that the pail may be of cylindrical formation in cross section or of any other shape desired; The
bottom 6 isprovided centrally with an opening 7 in which a valvesupporting sleeve-8 is secured. The valve supporting sleeve 8 is secured vertically within and to thewall of the opening 7 and extends above and below the inner and outer faces of the bottom 6. The inner portion of the sleeve is provided with a plurality of relatively spaced vertically extending outlet openings 9. V p
A spider 9' has a hub 10, and formed integrally with the hub and radiating therefrom are a plurality of spaced arms 11. The terminals of the arms 11 are secure'd'to the wall of the sleeve, as illustrated. The spider. is located in the plane of thewall of the opening 7 of the bottom 6 of the pail.
A valve 12 is located within the sleeve 8 and its exterior diameter is as great as the interior diameterof the sleeve to snugly fit therein. The valve is adapted to normally rest upon the upper side of the spider and to close the openings 9 in the sleeve and thus close the communication between the sleeve and pail body.
A top or cover 13 is secured to the inner upper end of the sleeve 8 and is provided centrally with an opening through which is slidably mounted avalve operating rod 14. The valve operating rod 14 is extended through the valve 12 and opening in the hub 10 of the spider and well below the same. The lower end of the valve rod 14 is enlarged as at 15 to' constitute a stop.- The valve 12 is secured to the valve rod 14 intermediate the ends thereof so that upon the lifting of the rod, the valve will be moved the spring bears against the upper side of the valve 12 and its opposite end against the under side of the top or cover 18, and this spring normally tends to seat the valve against the spider to close the communication between the sleeve and pail through the opening 9.
The pail 5 is provided at diametrically opposite points with offset, bosses 19, each of which has an aperture in which one end or terminal of an inverted U-shaped bail 20 is adapted to be secured. lhe upper end of the flexible valve operating member 17 is connected to the bail 20.. The terminal of the flexible operating means has secured therein an operating ring 21 which may be readily grasped for raising the valve rod 14: and lifting the valve '12 from its engagement wi h the spider to permit the contents of the pail to flow out through the openings 9 into and out through the sleeve and bottom wall of the pail.
A sprinkling nozzle is. designated in its entirety by the numeral 22 and comprises a perforated front wall 23 and an imperforated rear wall 2 1. Each wall is provided with side flanges 25 which constitute means whereby they may be removably connected together as at 26.
A cylindrical connecting member 27 is formed integrally with the rear wall 24: and at an angle thereto so as to permit it to be readily connected to the lower outer portion of the sleeve 8 to convert the pail into a sprinkling can.
It will be understood that, by virtue of the angular formation of the connecting member 27 with relation to the head or nozzle 22 when it is slidably fitted upon the lower depending portion of the sleeve 8, the nozzle head will beat an angle to the bottom wall 6 so as to constitute a sprinkling nozzle.
It will also be understood that the cylindrical connecting member 27 is of a diameter sutficient to permit it'to be frictionally fitted upon the depending'portion of the sleeve 8 so as to prevent of itsaccidental displacement therefrom.
It will be understood that the head 22 may be readily moved and the sleeve 8 may have its lower end arranged in theradiator of an automobile so that it may be readily and quickly filled with water.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that the pail body 5 is first filled with water or the like and by grasping the flexible member 17 and pulling upwardly thereon, the rod 1% will be raised and due to the fact that the rod is connected to the valve 12 the valve will be lifted from its seat or engagement with the spider against the tension of the spring 18, thus establishing a communication between the sleeve and pail body through the medium of the openings 9. immediately upon the releasing or" the flexible member 17, the spring 18 will normally urge the valve back into its engagement with the spider and thus close this communication.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A combined pail and sprinkler compris ing a pail having an opening in its bottom wall, a sleeve secured in said opening and projecting above and below the bottom of said pail, the upper portion of said sleeve having inlet openings formed therein, a cap secured over the upper end of said sleeve, a spider secured in said sleeve in the same plane with the bottom wall of the pail and having a central opening and radially arranged outlet openings, a removable sprinkler member mounted on the lower end of said sleeve, a bail handle for said pail, a valve rod having a limited movement through the central opening of the spider and through the cover of the sleeve, a valve rigidly mounted on said valve rod, a flexible member connected with the upper end of said valve rod and with the bail handle of the pail, an operating ring secured in the upper portion of said flexible member whereby a finger may be inserted to raise the valve from position upon the spider without releasing the grip upon the bail handle of the pail, said valve when raised from the spider permitting the fluid from the pail to pass into and through the sleeve and through the openings of the spider, and means surrounding the valve rod between the valve and the cap of the sleeve to resiliently retain the valve in engagement with the spider.
