Specification of Letters Patent. Patentdsgpj, 21, 1920,
Application filed March 3, 1917,-v Serial No. 152,371. Renewed August 4, 1920. Serial No. 401,282.
ments in Scythe-Snathes; and I do hereby dev clare the following to a be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to so construct a Scythe-snathe as to enable the mowing of a wide swath without undue exertion on the part of the manipulator.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows an elevation of the scythe, Fig. 2 an end view and Fig. 3 the position in use.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the snathe which is formed with an upright portion 2 to the lower end of which the Scythe-blade 3 is secured by any preferred means. As shown the tang 3a ofthe blade carries a plate 6 having a cylindrical extremity 7. A sleeve 8 with binding screws receives this extremity and that of the snathe and permits ofV adjustment of the snathe relative to the blade. p
t designates the gripping portion ofthe snathe, forming a continuation of the upright 2 and occupying a position approximately at right angles thereto, and extending in the direction of the blade, the extreme end of the gripping portion being deflected upwardly to a slight degree. To the gripping or handle portion I secure nibs or handles in the usual manner. The angular disposition of the handle portion relatively to the upright portion 2 is designed to bring the blade andthe vhandle portion substantially in parallelism and opposite each other,
that is, extending in the same direction from the portion 2, thus more effectively balancing the weight of the scythe in the hands of the operator. I have found that this permits an easier manipulation of the scythe and requires a minimum of energy. The gripping portion 4 terminates within the length of the blade to better distribute the force.
It will be apparent that the Scythe-snathe may be adjusted to any required height and that by means of the peculiar formation thereof the scythe will hang in such way that in mowing it will draw at right angles with the left-hand end nib, insuring a level draw on the sod. A snathe so constructed will have a wide circular sweep.
I claim as my invention:
In a Scythe, a blade having a tang, a plate carried by said tang and formed with a cylindrical extension, a snathe having a straight portion, 2, a sleeve having binding bolts to receive the lower extremity of said portion 2 and the cylindrical extremity of said plate, and a handle portion, 4, on said snathe extending at substantially right angles from said portion 2in the same direction as the blade and substantially parallel with the blade.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
