` IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 135,358, dated January 28, 1573.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES PARTELLO,
of Watertown, in the county of J eierson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Sash-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ot` a windowsash, showing the application of a fastening constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the sash, showing a side elevation of the fastening. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cast-metal leverandlockin g-pin detached from the spring, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring.

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of sash-fastenings, which are composed of a dat spring secured at one end in the edge of the sash, and provided with an operating-handle and locking-pin, the handle being arranged to project through the sash, and the pin to extend from the free end of the spring into recesses formed in the windowcasing. The locking-pin andoperating-lever are each formed with a short shank or stud placed within a hole in the spring where it is riveted or headed downthe pin at the free end of the spring, and the lever betweenfthe pin and xed end of the spring. Thisc'onstruction of the fastenin g necessitates the formation of large rivet-holes in the spring, which tends to weaken the latter and cause it to break, more especially, at the point of its connection with the operating-lever. Inasmuch, also, as the lever and pin are in separate pieces, the labor and cost of constructing the fastening are considerable, because these parts must be cast and applied to the spring separately.
For the purpose of decreasing the cost of manufacture and producing a cheaper and better fastening, my invention consists in casting or formingthe operating-lever and lockingpin in one piece, with an intermediate offset, and in securing the spring thereto, as I will now proceed to describe.
In the accompanying drawing, A is the operating-lever and B the locking-pin, cast or formed' in one piece, with an intermediate plate, C, as'shown. D is the spring, secured to the plate C by inserting its free end within a notch or recess, j, formed at the base of the pin B, and by a rivet, g, cast upon the face of the plate in front of the pin. The rivet g lis inserted through a small hole, h, in the spring, and its end headed down upon the latter, as shown.
By this construction the spring is firmly secured to the locking-pin and operating-lever.
The rivet g and corresponding hole 7L in the spring may be made very small, so as not to weaken'the latter, because they serve mainly to hold'the spring upon the plate without being subjected to strain or leverage when the fastening is in operation. The leverage upon the spring, instead of being at the rivet, is transferred to the angle formed bythe operat; in g-lever and plate O and for the purpose of relieving it I sometimes round off this angle or cast the plate with a round instead nof square corner.
Instead of forming a notch, f, in the locking-pin to secure the free end of the spring, it may be secured by a second rivet cast upon the face of the plate between the pin B and rivet g, as will be readily understood.
The fastening thus constructed is applied to the window-sash I in the usual manner, one end of the spring being secured in the edge of the sash so that the operating-lever shall extend through the latter in a straight line, as shown in Fig. 2, or bent at an angle so as to extend through the face of the sash, as shown in Fig. 1. In the latter case I prefer to employ the escutcheou J, to assist in operating the fastening and raising the sash, as claimed by me in a former application for Let ters Patent.
By my invention the sash-fastening is made stronger and cheaper than the old style, which it is designed to supersede, and is far less liable to break when in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what vl claim as new is- The sash-fastening consisting of the operating-lever A, locking-pin B, and intermediate plate C, cast or formed in' one piece, with one or more pins, g, and combined with the spring D, substantially in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
