To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. DILLON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at This invention relates to that class of wrenches in which the handle is pivoted and acts as a lever to cause the jaws to hold against the article or part engaged thereby.
It is an object of the invention to arrange the parts of a wrench of that type in such manner that the leverage of the handle in the direction to cause the j aws to grasp will increase with the increase of swing of the handle on its pivot and the grip of the aws will increase in greater ratio than the force exerted on the handle to turn or hold the article or part grasped by the aws.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the jaws are maintained in contact with the articleor part grasped when little or no force is beingv exerted against the handle.
When read in connection with the description herein, thedetails of construction and arrangement .of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.v
While the disclosures herein exemplify what now is considered to be a preferable embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily thereto in interpretation of the claims, as modifications and adaptations within the limits of the claims can be made without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention. 7

aving more particular-reference to the drawing, 6 designates an elongated I relatively fixed jaw member having at one end a jaw 7. Two substantially parallel sides or arms 8 extend from a place adjacent to the aw to accommodate operative parts of the device.

ing a jaw 10, includes a comparatively thick and strong slide portion 11 anda thinner web 12 extending therefrom. The slide 11 is movable in a guideway 13 at the jaw end of the space between the arms 8, the walls of the guideway being said arms, the end'wall of that space, and oppositely-disposed abut? Inents 14 on the inner sides of the arms. The slide 11 fits rather snugly in the guideway, the web 12extends snugly between and beyond the abutments, and the movable jaw.

The portion of the web 12 that extends beyond the abutments'into the space between the arms 8 is formed with a circular or otherwise rounded seat 15, and therein is disposed a roller 16. That roller is journaled on a pin 17 held in the legs 18 of the bifurcated end of an intermediatelever or rockable member 19, the legs straddling the web.' The member 19 is ositioned between the arms 8 and is pivote its'ends on a pin 20 carried by those arms.
The portionof the member on the side of its pivotal mounting opposite to the roller 16 has a longitudinally-disposed opening or,
slot21, and a roller 22is positioned in that slot or opening. The roller 22 is journaled on a pin 23 carried by the straddling legs 24: of the bifurcated end of a handle member 25, which latter is mounted pivotally between the arms 8 on a pin 26 carried by those arms near their ends opposite to the jaw 7.
The pins 17 and 23 constitute parts of the intermediate member and the handle member, respectively, and the rollers thereon may be dispensed with, if desired, and the device still remain capable of efficientoperation. However, it is preferable to retain the rollers to reduce friction.
When the jaws 7 and 9 are placed in engageinent with the article or part, to be turned or held, the handle member, in order to cause the jaws to grasp tightly the thing therebetween, is moved or has force exerted thereon in the direction indicated by the intermediately of stressed in that direction, the intermediate lever will be operated to move or to exert force in the movable jaw member toward the fixed, jaw and against the thing therebetween, and the greater the exertion on the.
handle the greater will be the grasping action of the jaws.

Moreover, the rockable member enables the handle member to be swung or stressed in the same direction as the movable jaw,
which is of advantage in some instances of use of a wrench of this character; whereas, it the end of handle member were engaged directly with the movable aw member, that member would be moved or stressed in a direction opposite to that of the handle memher.
The aws may be released from the article grasped bymoving the handle member in a direction opposite to that for grasping.
Although the relatively movable parts fit as snugly together as is permitted for their efficient and easy operation, necessarily there is a certain amount of clearance between the parts. This is utilized in connection with means to impart that relative movement of the jaws toward each other that is permitted'by the clearance, in order that, when the jaws are engaged with a pipe, nut, or other article, they will remain in contact therewith before stress is exerted on the handle in gripping direction Such action of the jaws is caused by a leaf-spring 26, having a roller 2'? at one end bearing against that portion oi the slide 11 of the jaw member 9 that extends bevond the guideway 13, and it is connected at the other end to the aw member 6 and maintained at an inclination to the slide by a screw 28. The springvis so positioned that by bearing against the slide it will move the two aws toward each other that distance permitted by clearance of parts.
Having thus described my invention, what i claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench comprising a relatively fixed jaw member having a guideway therein, another jaw member including a slide movable in said guid'eway and having a seat, a member pivoted on said relatively fixed member,
a roller on one end portion of said pivoted member disposed in said seat, there being an opening in the other end portion of said pivoted member, a handle member pivoted on said relatively fixed member, and a roller on an end portion of said handle member disposed in said opening. a

A wrench comprising a relatively fixed jaw member having a guideway therein, another jaw member including a slide movable in said guideway and a web extending from said slide formed with a seat, an interme diate member pivoted '-on said relatively fixed member having legs on one end portion straddling said web, a roller on said legs operable in said seat, there being an opening in the other end portion of said intermediate member, a handle member pivoted on said relatively fixed member having legs straddling said intermediate member, and a roller on saidlatter legs operable in said opening.
3. A wrench comprising a relatively fixed jaw member having a guideway therein and substantially parallel arms, another jaw member including a slide movable in said guideway and a web extending from said slide formed with a seat, an intermediate member pivoted on and between said arms having legs on one end portion straddling said web, a pin on said legs operable in said seat, there being an opening in the other end portion of said intermediate member, a ban die member pivoted on and between said arms having legs straddling said interme diate member, and a pin on said latter legs operable in said opening.

A wrench comprising two relatively movable jaw members of which one has a web formed with a seat and the other an extension, a lever member mounted pivotally on said extension having legs on one portion straddling said web, a pin on said legs operable in said seat, there being an opening in the other end portion of said lever member, a handle member mounted pivotally on said extension having legs straddling a portion of said lever member, and a pin on said latter legs operable in said opening.
5. A wrench comprising two relatively movable jaw members of which one has a web formed with a seat and the other substantially parallel arms, a lever member mounted pivotally on .:and between said arms having legs on one end portion straddling said web, a pin on said legs operable in said seat, there being an opening in the other end portion of said lever member, a handle member mounted pivotally on and between said arms having legs straddling said lever member, and a pin on said latter legs operable in said opening.
