Application filed December T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED CHINA LORME, a citizen of the United States, rpsiding at East Orange, in the county of ltsser; and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Safety Spark-Gaps for l/lagnetos, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety spark 78 for magnetos, and an object of the invention isto provide a construction of spark gapwhicn is of comparatively few parts, wh ch is very durable, wherein the spark gap may be readily adjusted, and wherein the current generating coil may be remoyed from the magneto with the spark gap intact so that the coil may be tested with battery current. 7
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the inven tion:
Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, showing a magneto having my improved safety spark gap applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an end view with the generating coil removed and with the spark gap attached thereto;

The invention is directed particularly to a safety spark gap for magnetos having normally stationary generating coil such as used on the well-known Dixie magneto. One of the members of the safety spark gap is in direct connection with the high tension terminal of the coil, and the other member is associated with the grounded or frame side of the condenser.
Referring more in detail to the drawingsz I have shown a magneto which is illustrated more or less diagrammatically M in the drawings. This magneto includes permanent magnets 1. The pole pieces of the coil carrying structure are indicated at Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, 1920.

2 and 8. Removably supported on these pole pieces is a normally stationary current generating coil indicated at 4. Said generating coil is provided with a core 5 and with suitable heads (3 and 7 of insulating material.
Mounted upon the core and between the heads 6 and 7 is a secondary coil 8 and a primary coil 9. These coils are indicated diagrammatically in Fig. 6 of the drawings. Mounted on the head 6 is a combined primary and secondary terminal 10. The other terminal of the secondary is indicated (t 11 and this t rminal 11 is mounted on a plate 12 of insulating material suitably secured between the heads 5 and 7. Connect ed to the terminal 11 and preferably molded in the plate 12 of insulating material is a suitable conductor 13, the upper end of which is supported by an extension 14; of insulating material which may be formed integral with the plate '7. This conductor 13 projects from the face of the insulating material, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings and forms one of the spark gap points.
Mounted on the top of the coil and supported by the heads 6 and 7 is a condenser 15. The condenser 15 carries the other spark gap point 16 which is connected to the core 5 by being connected to or formed integral with the terminal clip 17 which is the terminal of the condenser and which is connected to the core 5.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, 1 have shown more or less diagrammatically the arrangement of the parts. The'primary coil 9 is connected, above noted, to the terminal 10 which in turn is grounded and also to the terminal 18. The terminals 10 and 18 are connected to the interrupter which is indicated. at 19. The secondary coil 8 is connected to the terminal 10 and also to the terminal 11, as above noted, and the ignition current is taken from the terminal 11, the spark plug being indicated at 20 in this figure of the drawings. The safety spark gap, formed by the spark gap points or members 13 and 16, is connected on the one hand to the terminal 11 and thus to the high tension or secondary coil 8, while the other point of the spark gap is connected with the clip 1'? of the condenser 15. and th: .uqh this terminal clip with the core 5 which is grounded. The other terminal of the condenser is connected with the terminal l8.
From the above, it will be apparent that the safety spark gap is made of comparatively few parts and that the spark gap members may be readily adjusted relative to each other by bending the terminal 16, thus varying tie width of the spark gap. Furthermore, by extendin the insulating material 14 I am able to form a very durable support for the spark gap point 13. Then again, by my construction wherein the spark gap points are supported wholly by the combined condenser and coil structure and connected to the terminals of the coil and condenser, I am able to remove the generatingcoil with the condenser and test the coil by battery current, the spark gap remaining intact at this time.
It obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 2- 1. In a magneto, the combination with a stationary current generating coil, of a safety spark gap including spaced members, and devices for supporting said spark gap memberson said coil structure where'bysaid members may be removed from the magneto with the coil structure.
2. In a magneto, the combination with a stationary current generating coil, a condenser associated with said current generating coil and removable therewith, of a safety spark gap including spark gap mem bers supported by said condenser and coil structure and removable from the magneto therewith.
In a magneto, a condenser, a stationary current generating coil, and a safety spark gap including spark gap members mounted upon said coil and wholly supported thereby, one of said members being connected with the secondary terminal of the generating coil and the other with the terminal of the condenser.

6. A magneto including in combination a current generating coil having a core, a primary and a secondary winding supported thereby, terminals for the primary and secondary windings, a condenser supported by the coil, a terminal for saidcondenser connected with the core of the coil, a safety spark gap including spark gap members carried by said coil, one of which is connected to said terminal of the condenser and the other of which is connected to a terminal of the secondary winding.
7. A magneto including in combination a current generating coil having a core,'p'ri mary and secondary windings supported thereby, heads at each end of said 'core,a plate of insulating material connecting said heads and having an extension, of a spark gap including a combined conductor and spark gap point supported by said exten sion and connected to the secondary coil, and a cooperating spark gap point supported by the'coil structure and removable therewith.
8. A magneto including in combination, a
' stationar current eneratin coil includin a b b a core, primary and secondary windings supported by said core, a head at each end of the core, a plate of insulating material connecting said heads and extending above the same, a condenser supported by said heads and having a terminal connected with the core, a combined conductor and spark gap point supported by the extension and connected with one terminal of the second ary, and a cooperating spark gap point supported by the condenser and connected with the grounded terminal of said condenser.
