To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY RANDOLPH VAN DEVENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, haveobject the provision of a magneto in which the coil terminal is mounted upon the coil,.
so the conducting cable may be easily and quickly attached and detached thereto.
Another object is to eliminate all brushes in the connection between the winding and the cable leading from the magneto to the spark plug or other device.
A further object is to provide a compact arrangement in which'the winding and the terminal therefor may be removed from the magneto as a unit.
For the sake of illustration; I describe my invention as applied to a magneto of the well known Dixie type. As the construction and operation of such magnetos are well known, I will only describe same sufficiegtly to enable my invention to be understoo Reference being had to the accompanying drawing, l denotes the winding or windings of the magneto. These are wound about a core 2, which is removably supported in the pole pieces 3 and 4. The winding has insulating heads 5 and 6 of any suitable material, and 6 is formed with the projecting portion 7 in which is embedded a suitable terminal 8, to which is connected one end of the winding. The head 6 may be of any suitable form, arranged so that the projecting part 7 may pass through the apertured side plate 9 of the magneto. This plate has an annular extended portion 10, adapted to be embraced by the soft rubber cap 11, surrounding the cable 12 which has secured to its end the terminal pm 13 adapted to make contact with the socket terminal 8 or to connect to any suitable arrangement in any suitable manner.
By removing the side cover plates 9 and- 14, the coil structure may be removed from the magneto as a unit ,.by merely pulling the cable 12 out of the socket; and there are no brushes or contacts any where in the circuit between the cable 12 and the winding on the coil except the contact between 13 and 8. It will also be noted that I eliminate entirely the expense and complication incident to mounting a terminal for the cable 12 upon the side cover plate 9 as has heretofore been done, which necessitates a brush or other contact connection between the said terminal and the terminal for the winding carried on the head of the coil.
I further eliminate the disadvantages ex-' isting in arrangements wherein the cable 12 is permanently lashed to or otherwise attached to the unit, for when it is necessary to take the coil out of the magneto, and the cable 'is attached, difliculty is ex erienced unilless the cable is disconnected from the co While I have described one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that modifications can be made in the mounting and shape of the coil head carrying the terminal 8 without however departing from the invention as herein claimed:
1. In an ignition dynamo, a generating winding having heads, a circuit terminal embedded inone of said heads and having an outwardly projecting portion, a cover plate adjacent said outwardly projecting portion of said terminal and vaperturedto receive the latter,'and a conductor having a terminal adapted to connect with said first mentioned terminal, substantially as described.
2. In an ignition dynamo, a generating winding, an insulatin head therefor, a terminal embedded in said head the latter having a projecting portion, a cover for said dynamo having an aperture through which the projecting portion of said head may be reached, and a conductor passing through said apertured cover and connected to said terminal, substantially as described.
3. In an ignition dynamo having fixed pole pieces, a unit structure comprlsing a core bridging said pole pieces and carrying a stationary generating winding, heads'for spark plug cable leading into said dynamo and a socket'terminal on said unitary structure to which said cable may be joined, substantially as described.
4. In an ignition dynamo having stationary pole pieces, a core connecting said pole 5 pieces, heads on said core and a winding between the heads, said core heads and winding forming a unit structure removable from said dynamo and normally stationary therein, a socket terminal carried upon said unit structure and connected to said wind- 10 ing and a spark plug cable leading into said dynamo and joined to said terminal.
