To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. S'HEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Mounts for Boats, of which the follOWiIlg is a specification.

In my application for patent No. 206,407, I have described a torpedo boat with a-cockpit at the rear large enough to hold an operator or operators, the forward part being just long enough to carry a torpedo and belng practically submerged when the boat is running, the cockpit being carried up slightly higher to permit observation and direct-ion of the boat.

My present invention aims to provide a suitable mount for a gun on boats of this and similar types.

The accompanying. drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawings the forward or torpedo carrying art of the boat is indicated at A and t e cockpit or operators cabin at B with an upwardly projecting deck or cover C at the top of which is a hatch D hinged at its rear end so that it can be thrown back. The gun E is mounted above the deck. It may be a small cannon as shown, or ,a machine gun or a gun of any other t pe, and is mounted on a. vertical pivot on a cross-bar G provided with trunnions H at its ends which turn in the ends of arms J extending down along the sides of the projecting art C of the cabin and mounted on a shaft K which is journaled in the side walls of the cabin..

This constructionbrings the gun down close to the hatch so that when the latter is open the operator can use the gun without having to come out on deck; the arms J belng of such a length that the arc through which their ends swing is close to the top of the deck. Any usual or suitable means may be used for adjusting the position of the gun and holding, sighting and firing it.

By swinging the arms J and by turning the gun on its vertical pivot F and on the trunnions H it can be very quickly aimed in any desired direction forward or back and angularly for protection against naval craft or shore guns or vertically at any desired angle for protection against air craft.

Though I have described with great particularity of detail a certain embodiment of my invention, yet it is not to be understood therefrom that the invention is restricted to the particular embodiment illustrated. Various modifications in detail and in the arrangement of the parts may be made by arm G on which the gun 1s vertically pivoted, and arms J in the ends of which said cross-bar is trunnioned and which extend down along the outside of the cabin and a transverse shaft K carrying said arms, said shaft being located below the deck and said arms being of such a length that their ends swing in an are close to the top of the deck.
