. COMBINATION PHONOGRAPH' AND LAMP.
Application filed .Tune 17,l
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER R. GoNsKY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Phonographs and Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe invention has for an objectto give a construction by which a sound arm lis provided that is also usuable to form one side of an ornamental lamp support, concealing its nature as a sound arm when so used. It is an important aim also to give an improved sound modulating means especially applicable to a phonograph of this character.
Additional objects, advantages, and features of invention will appear from the construction, arrangement and cordination of parts as represented in one embodiment of the invention, hereinafter described and shown inthe drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the invention in use for reproducing a record,
F ig. 2 is a similar view showing the device solely as a lamp,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the shade portion removed,
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the shade removed.
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the sound modulating valve,
Fig. 6 is a top view of a-central fragment of the shade frame.
Fig. 7 is a top view of the tubular post 14 and parts mounted thereon positioned for utilization of the sound arm and transcribino devices, as in Fig. 3.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the upper part of the post and the elbow mounting thereon including the inember 25,
Fig. 9 is a sectional view of the elbow 26 and the mounting ofthe sound arm therein.
There is illustrated a lamp providing an ornamental base 10 in which any suitable mechanism may be concealedv for rotating and supporting a sound record 11 and which may be provided with an ornamental cover 12 by which the record 11 may be covered and concealed when not being reproduced.
The casing 10 is inthe form of an urn, having arms 12 extended from opposite sides thereof in a form suggestive of handles, While upstanding tubular posts 13 and 14 re- Speccation of Letters Patent.` VPtiellied Sept.,21, 1920.
1919. serial No. 304,927. p
spectively arel supported upon these arms. ,i
Through theipost 13 and its respective arm 12, electric wires may be extended for energizing electric lightbulbs of suitable characterprovided in the .upper part of the appa.- ratus, as .will be described. Upon .the post 13 there is mounted an ornamental bracket arm 15, supporting lightsl and having Va suitable fastening 17 lights by which ashade 18 (as shown in Figs. 1 and 2) may be secured in place. The bracket arm terminates in a vertical end portion 19 upon which the klamp and bracket device 17are mounted, the member 17 forming aterminal element on the part 19. In the lower part of the'post 14 there is mounted on a transverse axis a small butterfly thereon above the valve 20, the postcomprisingin the main a cylindrical tube upon the lower part of which there is revoluble a collar 21. The
valve 20 is formed with alongitudinally 7"* slotted arm22 at one sideclose to its pivot, this arm receiving therethrough a pin projected through a fsuitablevslotfin thetubular post and being mounted upon the inner surface of the sleeve. 21 which' is'revoluble vupon the postand Vsuitably 'knurled upon .the out@ side for manipulation whereby its rotation will oscillate the valve 20 to open or close it. It should be noted that the arm 22 and its slot extend obliquely with respect to the plane of the valve 2() and the slot through which the arm 22 projects, this-permitting the valve to be moved into full open position, in a plane coincident with the axis of the tube 14. Upon the upper end of the post 14 there is mounted for rotation on a vertical axis a hollow. ball-shaped element 25 correl spending to a similar thick element '25 upon the opposite post, the ball 25 having a hollow sleeve 25a projected loosely into the post 14. At one side an elbow 26 is mounted upon the ball 25, revoluble upon avhorizontal axis with respect to the ball, its outer arm having rotatably mounted therein the base of a sound'arm 27 identical in form with Vthe bracket arm 15 before mentioned,
the bracket arm 15 being rigidly connected with the ball member 25 by means of anV elbow connection 26.
-The arm 27 it will be seen is in the shape of an ogee curve, and has upon its swinging end the usual sound box and other reproducing mechanism for cordination with the record 11, as at 28. The arm 27 is of such length that when the ball member 25y is from at one sideoi' the plane in which the posts 13 and 14 are disposed, and the arm 27 rotated so that when the connected part of the elbow 26 is horizontal, or nearly so, a needle mounted in the sound reproducer will engage the record, and the needle will extend in a direction nearly or quite coin-cciding with the direction of the sound record grooves. 1t should be further noted that thelength of the bracket arm 1.5 is such that when the ball 25 is rotated on a vertical axis to bringV the elbowl 26 tothe inner side of the post 14, and the arm 27 rotatedin the elbow to bring its inner end into close proximity with the part 19 of the bracket arm 15, the sound arm and supporting post will have thesame symmetrical relation to the vertical axis of the complete device as the parts 13, 15, and 25.- Upon the upper end of the bracket arm 15 there is provided an engaging device 30 constructed toengage with a part of the sound or reproducing device 2S to hold it in raised position when engagedy therewith. In the present instance, the device 30 consists of a headed pin` under which appart of the sound box may be sprung, this pin being engagedin a casting or other suit- V ably' milled fitting 31 including the upper end oi the bracket arm 15, the lights 16 being inounted'upon short lengths of tubing screwed intov the fitting 31, the fastening 17 comprising a`screw threaded into thev upper part of the Vfitting 31. Y
The shade 18 A'ncludes a spider frame 32 at its upper part having a central late 34 apertured to receive the screw 1 Vdownwardly therethrough, by which means the shade is secured against casual detachment and supported properly in position.
What is claimed; p
1. In a machine and lamp of the character described, a base, a bracket arm mounted thereon and extending upwardly 'into a central position over the base, lamp appliances carried thereby, a sound arm having a form similar to that of the bracket arm, saidV sound. arm movable at times intoY an op'- posing position corresponding symmetrically witli that ofsaid bracket arm, and means to releasably hold the sound arm in Y the last named position.
reproducermay be moved into'engagementA with a. recordy upon said platen and oscillated thereon, at times, and to be at. other times in symmetrical lopposition to the first named extension..
In testimony where'o I have aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER R. GONSKY.
