EDWARD 1;. harm, or NEWTON, .xAnsAsQ- TOoZZ whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, EDW R B. =BARR, a-
citizen of the United States, residing at' Newton, in the county of Harvey,'-State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use-; ful Improvements in Door-Latchesfand I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
This invention relates to door latches and it has for its object to provide a construction in which the bolt will snugly fit against the keeper when the door is latched, so as to prevent rattlingof the latter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a door, the adjacent amb; with the latch casing and the keeper, being in section as also the latch spindle with the sleev thereon. 9
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken centrally through the structure shown in Fig.
1, the latch bolt, the spindle with its knobs and the connections between the spindle and bolt, being in plan.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the pivotal bolt.
Referring to the drawings, the present mechanism comprises an elongated casing 5 that is secured against the inner face of a door 6, in any desired manner such as through the medium of screws 7 passed through ears 8 and into the door.
The casing 5 is set with one end flush with the free-edge of the door 6 and from the-rear of the casing near this outer end there is an extension 9 that is let into the material of 5 pivot 12.
the door. In the outer end'wall of the casing 5 is a horizontal slot Which is continued through the end wall of the extension 9, which latter is narrow and has pivoted therein one end of a tapered bolt 10 that fits slidably in the slot 11 above referred to so that it may be swung to project from the casing or to lie entirely therewithin, as the case may be. The end of the bolt 10 opposite to its pivot 12, is itsmajor end and is curved eccentric to the pivot '12, the center of such curvature lying inwardly of the casing from the pivot 12 so that successive points of the outer end surface of the bolt, inwardly of the casing, recede from the Application file'd October '4, 1319. seria 'no. 328,397.
' noon-Lemon. j T v ia i h s il ate .i c d I t onwithj-the par-ts described and is recess.ed
:shown f at; 14, the}; recess being framed about by' a keeperplate 15 having a slot '16 in it, withcwhich registersthe slot 211 when the dooris in closed position. When the doorjis closed, the bolt 10 may be swung outwardly to enter one corner through the slot 16 and such movement may be continued to finally wedge the curved end face 17 of the bolt ja gainstithecorresponding end wall of the slot'l6, "When the bolt visin 1 this wedged position, it'holds the outer face of the door 6 close against the stop 18 on the jamb .13 so that the-door cannot rattle.
In order to hold the bolt normally probe projected into the keeper slot16, a rod 19 is provided which is forked at one end as shown at 20 and in this fork is pivoted the inner free end corner portion of the bolt.- The rod 19 passes through a slot 21 in a partition 22 within the casing 5 andthere be-' jected, in which position it will strike the keeper plate 15 and be pressed into the cas-fl 1 ing when the door is closed, to subsequently yond and upon the rod between the partition and the bolt, is a helical spring 23 that bears at one end againstthe partition and at the.
otherend. against 'a washer 24: on the rod that is held against sliding movement there on by the pin 25. This spring permits the bolt to be swung into the casing but holds it normally projected.
To retract the bolt, the rod 19 is provided with the usual yoke 26 at its other end having the laterally ldirected fingers 27 that bear against the arms 28-that radiatefrom r the usual sleeve ;29 on the spindle 30 that has bearings in the casing 5 and projects at one end from the casing and at the other end from the outer surface of the door, the spindle having the usual'knobs 31 for oscillating it. With this construction it will be understood that in whichever direction the spindle may be rocked, the rod 19 will be retracted to withdraw the bolt 10 in the casing.
Thus is there provided a mechanism of the spring latch *type, that serves to securely look a' door and to holdfit firmly against shaking while it may itself be instantly manipulated to release the door; r
What is'claimed is: v The combination withfa door jamb having a door stop and a keeper plate having a retaining edge in parallel spaced relation the axis of moyementof thebolt-and dis-' to the of a door disposed to rest with a side face against the stop and its opposite side face between the stop and said retaining edge, and a segmental bolt having. its curved "in'g position and means for swinging the posed and. displaced from the. latter in a. direction away from the jamb, whereby to insure contact of the curved bolt end with the keeper edge normally, and means for holding the bolt yieldably in such contactbolt from such contacting position.
In testimony whereof, I afiixmy signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
