According to the present invention a steam superheating element and la feedwater heating element are inserted in one and the same smoke or firet'ube'of the boiler so that the fire gasesflowing through said tube serve both for superheating the steam in the superheater element and for heating the boiler feed-water in the feed-water heating element. the superheater element or elements. Further the superheater element is so formed or arranged within the smoke tube that it serves to more effectively break up the fire gases passing through the smoke tube and produce. a better distribution .of the gases over the heating surfaces of the feed-water heating and steam 'superheating elements, thus increasing the efiiciency of the apparatus, andalso tends to extend the life of the feed-water heating element or elements.
Further the construction and arrangements according to this invention are such that either of the feed-water heating ele ments in two adjacent smoke or fire tubes can, be independently withdrawn. from the respective fire tube without withdrawing the other element and without interfering with the superheater elements in the said smoke tubes. The short return-loops of the superheater element, situated at or forming part of the element adjacent the'fire box end of the smoke tube and extending forwardly toward the smoke box to about midway of the length of the smoke tube (or to a lesser distance as may be found suitable) are so formed or arranged that these short loops lie in parallel oblique planes in the smoke tube and adjacentthe sides thereof, the return bend connecting the longitudinal pipes of the short return loops at the smoke box end of the short return loop portion of the element preferably lying in the central vertical-plane (this return bend might however lie in a plane oblique to the central vertical plane) of the smoke tube, and the longitu dinal saturated'steam inlet and superheated steam outlet pipes of the element are bent laterallyor outwardly so that these pipes lie adjacent the sides of the smoke tube and preferably in the horizontal central plane of the tube. The feed-water heating pipe or element, preferably of the U-loop-type, is arranged between the aforesaid longitudinal steam inlet and outlet pipes of the superheater element and preferably in the vertical central plane of the smoke tube, the inner or return bend of the feed-water heating ele ment within'the smoke tube lying adjacent the short return loop portion of the superheating element. Preferably the feed-water heater comprises at least two U-loop pipes or elements one, of which has its inlet end suitably connected to a pipe which receives water inlet end of the teed-water heater ele: ment in the adjacent smoke tube theoutlet nd of thi latter el m n be ng s itably con.- nected to a pipe leading int!) the boiler the arrangement being such that the feed-water upp i to and passing. hr h t e fi s element in direct communication with the supply passes from the said element into and through the feed-water heating element in the adjacent smoke tube and thence into the boiler.
The invention further consists in the several parts arranged in combination substantiallyas hereinafter described with refer? ence to and shown in the acompanying drawings in which,- V Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section, of a boiler smoke-box and the front end portion of a feed-water heater and superheater, constructed according to this invention. "In the drawings 1 indicates the barrel of the boiler, 2 the smoke box, 3 the smoke box tube plate and 4 the usual enlarged smoke tubes of the boiler-into which the superheater elements extend; 5 are the usual relatively small smoke tubes of the boiler.
6 are the feed-water heater elements there being, in theexample shown, three of these elements one extending into each of the boiler smoke tubes 4: containing a super heaterelement of the short return loop type as hereinbefore mentioned. In the example shown the saturated steam inlet and superheated steam outlet ends, marked respectively 7 and 7 of the several superheater elements are bent upwardly and secured, in the usual or any suitable manner, to the bot tomof the header 8 (of known or suitable form, in the smoke box 2. As clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3' and 1, the longitudinal steam (forming consuperheater' element extending into a smoke tube/4 are, for a portion of their length, slightly greater than the total length of the 4c and between thepipes 7 and 7 of the superheater element.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the pipes, marked 7 and 7 of the short return loop portion of the superheater element are so formed or arranged that they, and their return bends or torpedo ends marked 8 Fig, 1 lie in parallel oblique planes the smoke i tube t as hereinbeforementioned, and the return bend 8 at the op-osite end lies in the central vertical lane of the smoke tube.
As clearly shown in 1 the legs or pipes of the U-shaped feed-water heater elements extend well forward into the smoke box so that the extremities of these pipes are well clear of the ends of the superheater elements in the smoke box, and the said extremit-ies of theffeed-water heater pipes are fitted with removable screw plugs Qwhich when removed give access to the interior of the teed-water heater pipes for cleaning purposes in a known manner.
The feed-water heater elements in adjacent smoke tubes are connected to each other by flanges 10 on short tubular pieces 11 on the adjacent pipes conununication being thus formed between the elements in adjacent smoke tubes. Similarly tubular connections 12 and 12 with flanges 13 and 13 respectively are connected to the inlet leg or pipe of the feed-water heating element 6 in the lowermost smoke tube 4: (Figs. 1 and 4) and to the outlet leg or pipe of the element 6 in the uppermost smoke tube; To the flange 13 is connected the flanged pipe 14 (Fig. 4) to which the cold or relatively cold feed-water is admitted through the combination clack'valve device. 15 which is preferably the same or substantially the same in construction and working as that described and illustrated in the prior specification of Letters Patent ofthe United States numbered 1,2 1? ,769 and dated the 27th day of November 1917. i r
