WITNESS ATTORNEY VICTOR A. LINGLE, 0F LEWISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COIL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application filed March 5, 1920. Serial No. 368,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR A. LINGLE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Lewisburg, in the county of Union and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Coil-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motor vehicles and has particular relation to a box or casing for inclosing the spark coils of the ignition system, so as to reduce. the danger of the short circuiting of the conductor wires through water entering the hood during a heavy rain.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a-coil box in which the coils and coil terminals are readily accessible, so that in the event of trouble, the parts may be easily and quickly repaired.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved coil box shown in position upon a fragmentary portion of an automobile instrument board. I
Fig. 2 is a transverse secti'onahview. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the coil terminal compartment or housing.
Fig. 4: is a horizontal section. a Fig. 5 is a front elevation showing the cover partly'removed.
Referring to the drawin s in detail, wherein like characters of re erence denote corresponding parts, the invention comprises a coil box which is designated in its entirety by the reference character 10. The box is divided into a main coil compartment 11 and a terminal compartment 12. The coil compartment 11. is of elongated rectangular shape and is provided with an open top which is closed by a lid or cover 13, while the terminal compartment 12 has extended therefrom a conduit 14. This conduit rojects upwardly from the top of the terminal compartment 12 and extends across the top of the coil compartment 11 and in order that the lid or cover 13 of the coil compartment may be removed, the said lid or coverf is slidabl mounted upon thecoil compartment so t at it may be moved longitudinally of said compartment in its removal. In order to hold the lid or cover 13 in position,
-justing the coil terminals. -20 are normally closed by ahinged oor 21,
there is provided a spring catch 15, while the lid or cover has secured thereto a handle 16 for convenience in removing.
The terminal compartment 12' extends along. one side of the coil compartment 11, and is of less height than said compartment 11, and forms an extensional pro'ection of the coil box, with the side wall 1 of said box forming one of the side walls of the compartment 12. This side wall 17 is provided with a plurality of openings 18 for the passage of the coil terminals, which connect with the conductor wires leading to the spark plug of the engine and to the battery and magneto. In addition, the wall 19 of the terminal compartment 12 is provided at each end with an opening 20 by -means of which access may be had to the interior of the compartment 12 for the urpose of adwhich is provided with a suitable latch or look 22. The wall 19 is further provided with openings 23 to ermit of the positioning of the usual ignition switch, the wires of which extend through an [opening 24:.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is: 1
1. A coil box comprising a main coil compartment, a removable cover therefor, a terminal compartment and normally closed openings for said terminal compartment.
2. A coil box comprising a main coil compartment, a removable'cover therefor, a terminal compartment and normally closed openings for said terminal compartment, and a wire conduit leading from the term nal compartment over the top of the coil compartment.
3. A coil box comprising a main coil comhese o enings partment, a removable cover therefor, a terminal compartment extendmg along one side of the coil compartment and having openings in the dividing walls, a wireconduit leading from the top of the terminal compartment 'over the top of the coil compartment, and door controlled openings for the terIminal compartilmentii {fix t n testimon w ereo a m s1 a ure. y VICTOR A. v I LE.
