AM Pnoroilrnnsmi'mcca mflossonwsbmacsss) UNITED STATES THOMAS B. PATTEN, OF WEST AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,287, dated January 28, 1873.
. To all whom it may concern:
screwing into plates or nuts attached to the buggy body or top, preferably plates having two holes for both the bolts of a standard, the bolts being of square or other shape at the head adapted for being turned by a wrench.
This mode of fastening the standards to the body not only facilitates the removal of the top when it may be required, but it greatly strengthens the body.
Figure'l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a buggy body and top connected together according to my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The rear standards A are branched and shaped, as shown at B, to fit down in the corner of the body on the frame-pieces G, and secured to the body and an angle-plate, D, the latter being made fast to the under side of the body by bolts E passing through the branches and body and screwing into the plate. The front standards J have a branch, F, extending along the cross-piece G and similarly bolted to a plate, H, while the other portion extends down through the frame 0. The heads of the bolts are square or otherwise suitably shaped to be turned by a wrench, so that nuts may be dispensed with by having said bolts screw into the strengthening-plates instead of passin g through them; but they may be so arranged, if preferred. The standards A have branches B at the top, besides the main portion and the two standards'J terminate in two branches, F, all similarly bolted through the frame 0 to a plate by bolts E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent- 1. The means described for holding the rear standards AA of a buggy to its top and body, consisting of a branch and plate connected by suitable fastenings, as described.
2. The means described for holding the front standard of a buggy to its top and body, consisting of one plate bolted to a branch at top and another plate bolted to a foot extending through frame 0 at bottom, as described.
