To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Banana, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in the county of \Vestchest-er and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Combination Chalk-Trough. of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to chalk troughs;

and the object of the invention is to provide a device which can be mounted on top of a chalk trough of ordinary construction, and -form therewith a chalk trough and holder in which the chalk dust will be separated from the pieces of chalk and erasers, and in which the chalk dust can be cleaned out without disturbing the pieces of chalk and erasers; a further ob'ect of m invention is to provide a device 0 this kint so constructed that the dust can be cleaned out without any projections to interfere with the movement of the hand in cleaning'except those absolutely necessary to support the holder of the solid articles; and to provide a construction of such parts that will interfere as little as possible with the movement of the hand in cleaning.

The invention is illustrated panying drawing, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of a chalk trough combination in accordance with my invention. applied to a blackboard;

In the drawing, like numerals of reference refer to the same parts in each of the views.

In the drawing, the blackboard is 'ndicated with 4, and the chalk trough of rdinary construction with 5, having the ordinarv hollow portion 6 to form. a recelitacle at the lower edge of the blackboard.

In the construction of my invention 1 provide a number of brackets o; a contour to fit within the hollowed partiti of the trough 5; and these brackets are each provided with a. central orifice through which maybe passed a screw, as 9 so the brackets can be secured in position.

Each bracket is made of t e contour shown in Fig. 1, so the upper pa or chalk and eraser holder can be mounted on the same. As shown, each bracket is provided with shoulders 10, and 11, on which respectively are mounted the rods 12, and 13 adapted to hold the screen 14, through in the accomwhich the chalk dust may pass, but on which the pieces of chalk and erasers are supported so the pieces of chalk and dust are separated, as will be understood.

At the outer edge I mount astrip of molding 15, provided with a groove 16. adapted to embrace the rod 13 and outer edge of the supporting screen 14, This molding strip is provided with a flat side 17. adapted to rest upon a shoulder 18 of each bracket. These parts are so constructed that the side 17 will lie well below the screen 14 that in passing the hand along the open space 19 between the screen and rail, or molding, and the trough 5 there will be nothing to obstruct the passage. The brackets are provided with flattened central portions 21 with rounded sides so the hand will pass over these brackets easily.

In operation, the brackets and screen. with the molding, are mounted on top of an ordinary chalk trough. falls from the blackboard it will pass through the screen 14 to the trough 5. \Vhen it is desired to clean out this dust, a brush, or damp ra r can be grasped in one hand aril passed a ong the trough to wipe out the dust without disturbing the pieces of chalk, or the erascrs on the screen 14, as will be understood. In this operation the open space 19 will provide ready means for the passage of the hand in an unobstructed manner between the two parts. Should-it he desired to push the chalk dust past any one of the brackets the rounded, and flattened part 21 will provide ready means for push ingthe dust over the bracket without ma terial interference, as will be understood.

It will. thus be seen that l have provided a simple and eilicient device which may be readily mounted on an ordinary chalk trough so the dust will go into one receptacle while the chalk pieces and erasers will rest in an other, andneed not be disturbed in cleaning out the chalk dust. Thus, a chalk trough is made out of an ordinary chalk trough common in school rooms.

By bringing the molding, strip 15 below the screen 14, the hand can be passed along the trough 5 without interference of any kind except by one of the brackets T; and. these brackets are so constructed that like? chalk dust can readily be pushed over the same, if it is not desired to bring the dust out of the trough when the bracket is reached.
