To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. lUCURNANn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Building Structures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to the supporting of window-frames, as, for example, for show-windows, door-sash, or other frame members, in the openings, espe cially where they are large, in the walls of buildingsformed with a facing of terracotta, or other material having similar properties. i
w V A. serious disadvantage in the use of facing-blocks of terra-cotta, or other similar material, especially around large window and door-openings, is that the material is very brittle, preventing either the direct anchoring thereto of the securing means for frames in the openings, or the assembling therewith of such means in a way which causes stress to be applied against thefacing material; and this condition has resulted in the employment of very cumbersome means, and such as arc'inconvenient of installation for anchoring the frames in place, these objections being so great asto greatly militate against the use of terra-cotta. My primary object is to provide for the formation of walls of buildings having door, or window, opening, with a facing ofterracotta, or other similar material, which extends substantially'tothe window or dooropenings, and the supporting in such openings of window ordoor-fra1nes by a simple means, and one convenient and economical of installation with the wall, and in a manner whereby the load of these frames will be carried by the body-portion only of the wall, which is well adapted to withstand stress.
Referring e Figure 1 is a broken view in sectional elevation throughthe upper portion of the window-opening in a building-wall faced with terra-cotta blocks, the whole being constructed in'accordance 'with my invention and presenting one, embodiment thereof. Fig. 2 is a. broken plan-section taken through one of the side walls of thewindow to the accompanying. drawopenings of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a view like Fig. 2, showing another embodiment ofthe invention.
,Referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the body-portion of the wall is represented at 3, this portion, in the particular structure shown, being of concrete and in which the door and window-openings would be provided as illustrated at 4: of the opening for either a window or door in the construction shown. The body 3 of the wall isshown as formed with a facing constructed of blocks 5 0f-terrac0tta, or other de sirable ornamental material, the blocks 5, which are located directly at the opening 4;, extending preferably at their surfaces 6 flush with the inner surfaces of the body 3 forming the opening 4;, as shown in the drawing; Inthefarrangement shown, the facing-blocks 5 are anchored at their rear portions in the body 3 of the wall, and at their edges surrounding theopening i are recessed as indicated at 7, and the body 3 of the wall is reinforced by structural metal beams 8 and 9 extending across the top of the opening land at the sides thereof, respe ctively; The facing-blocks 5 will be secured'in place to the body 3 in any suitable manner, as, for example, the concrete of the body-portion 3 extending into recessed portions of these blocks, supplemented by tiegmembers, such as represented at 10, interlocked with certain of the blocks 5 and the flange 11 of the beams, as, for example, as shown of the beams 8.
According to the construction shown, an angle-iron 12 formed either as a continuous member, or in sections, spaced apart, or not, as desired, is secured at one flange 13 thereof to the web 11 of the beam 8, and extends at its other flange 14 forwardly into the recessed portion 7 of the adjacent facingblocks '5 extending across the upper portion of the opening 4, the flange 1 1 being off-set upwardly beyond the lower edge-portions. of the blocks 5 just referred to, and forming the top of the opening 4. At the sides of the openings i angle bars represented at 15, and each of which may either be continuous or formed in sections, as desired, connect, as by angle-bars 16, with the flange of the beams 9, as shown of the construction atone side of the opening in Fig. 2, and extend at their flanges 17 into the recessed portions 7 of the facing-blocks located at the sides of the opening 4:, the flanges 17 being inwardly off-set from the edges 6 of the blocks, as shown in Fig. 2.
The forward extremities, namely, the flanges 1st and 17, of the members 12 and 15, thus form portions which are rigidly anchored to the body-portion 3 of the wall, which present portions to which the window or door-frame may be attached, in order that the weight of the frame may be carried by the body-portion 3 of the wall. By preference, the flanges 1a and 17 carry strips represented at 18 of a material into which nails or screws may be driven, these strips, each of which may be continuous, or formed of sections spaced apart, or not, as desired, being shown as bolted to the flanges 1 1 and 17, and the parts being preferably so constructed and arranged that these strips will extend into the recesses 7, and preferably, though not necessarily, flush with the surfaces 6 of the facing locks 5, as shown, though, if desired, these strips may be offset from the surfaces 6 inwardly toward the center of the opening 1. The wineow or door-opening at thus presents members (the strips 1.8) to which the window or doorframe (not shown), and set into the opening e may be nailed or screwed.
In the forming of the wall the bars 14 and 15 which, in the construction shown, are continuous both at the top and sides of the wall opening, are set in place and secured to the I-beams before the concrete is poured, and thus may be readily plumbed.
In Fig. 3 T have illustrated the anchoring of the fra1ne-securing means in the wall opening in a manner more or less directly in the concrete of the body-portion of the wall, rather than to a metal beam in the wall, the wall shown in this figure being reinforced. In this arrangement, which shows the wall at one side only of the opening, these framesecuring means may be of any suitable construction to provide the desired anchorage, the bar 15 therein shown being of Z-shape in cross-section with anchor-bolts 100 secured thereto at intervals along the bar for embedment in the concrete of the walls The bar 15, or the strip 18 car ried thereby, or both, should be continuous from the top to the bottom of the opening in the wall and across the top of the opening, which permits the structure to be set in place preparatory to pouring the concrete, or the like material, forming the wall, when such material is used, the parts described thus becoming firmly anchored in the body-portion of the wall.
It will be noted from the foregoing that by supporting the frame in the opening 4 wholly by the body-portion of the wall, it is secured to the heavy substantial portion of the wall, which may be of masonry, concrete, or metal construction, and is thus firmly anchored in place and exerts no stress on the facing blocks, which is of special advantage, especially where the frame-openings are large and subjected to heavy wind pressures, and therefore the disadvantage of an insecure fastening, such as would exist if the fastening means directly engaged he facing, is overcome.
The lateral recessing of the facing-blocks as described is desirable, inasmuch as it permits the window-frames to be positioned a relatively short distance inwardly from the outer face of the wall, thus avoiding the undue shadowing of the window.
hile I have illustrated and described certain constructions in which my invention are embodied, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention, it being my intention to claim my invention as fully and completely as the prior state of the art will permit.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a building-wall formed of a body-portion with metal reinforcement therein and containing an opening and a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion and extend ing adjacent said opening, of means anchored directly to said reinforcement for securing a structure in said opening.
2. The combination with a building-mill formed of a body-portion of concrete, or the like, with metal reinforcement embedded therein and containing an opening and a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion and extending adjacent said opening, of means anchored directly to said reinforcement and embedded in the concrete of said body-portion, for securing a structure in said opening.
3. The combination of a building-wall formed of a body-portion with metal reinforcement therein and containing an opening and a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion and extend ing adjacent said opening, of metal members directly secured to said reinforcement, and members of wood, or the like, carried by said metal members and exposed at the sides of said opening for attachment thereto of a structure positioned in said opening.
4. The combination with a building-wall formed of a body-portion containing an openingand a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion, said blocks being laterally recessed at said opening, of means anchored wholly to said bodyportion for supporting a structure in said opening, said means extending into the recessed portion of said facin 5. The combination with a building-wall formed of a body-portion containing an opening and a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion, said blocks being laterally recessed at said opening, of means at opposite sides of said opening and extending continuously from top to bottom thereof and anchored wholly to said body-portion for supporting a structure in said opening, said means extending into the recessed portion of said facing.
6. The combination with a building-wall formed of a body-portion containing an opening, and a facing of blocks, or the like, connected with said body-portion, said blocks being laterally recessed at said opening, of a frame located in said opening, and means anchored wholly to said body-portion and connected with said frame for holding it in said opening, said means extending into the recessed portion of said facin 7. The combination with a building wall formed of a body-portion having a facing and containing an opening, of a frame located in said opening, members located at the sides and top of said opening and directly anchored to said body-portion, with portions thereof extending forwardly into over-lapped position relative to said facing, said facing and frame being spaced apart at those portions coincident with said members to provide spaces intowhich the latter extend, and said members being'connected with said frame for holding the latter in position in said opening.
10. The combination with a building-wall formed of a body-portion having a facing and containing an opening, of a frame located in said opening, bars located at the top and sides of saidopening and directly anchored to said body-portion with their forward portions extending into overlapped position relative to said facing and into recesses provided between said facing and frame, and means securing said bars at their forward edges to said frame, for the purpose set forth.
