Description

L. W. LEEDS.
Hot Air Furnace.
Patented Sept. 4, 1855;
Fey:
I .1 fl) H H. "H H "H. H "Hun LEIVIS V. LEEDS, OF GERMANTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS TO PREVENT AN OVER-SUPPLY OF COAL TO THE FIRE-BOXES OF HOT-AIR FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,525, dated September 4, 1855.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEwIs W. LEEDs, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Artificially lVarming or Heating Buildings, &c.; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my improvement in heaters consists in such an arrangement thereof, that the supply of coal to the furnace may be regulated by which means waste of coal from too deep a fire, and consequent obstruction of draft through the fire pot, or coal holder, from an undue quantity of coal thrown in at any time is obviated; this evil is of frequent occurrence from carlessness of attendants in furnaces of the ordinary construction. In my improvement by the introduction of space between the the pot and walls of the furnace, on two or more sides thereof, of suflicient size to permit the coal to fall through when an undue quantity is thrown on the fire pot; this evil of excess of coal is avoided but an open space, that is one through which the draft may pass must, be avoided, this gave rise to the second part of my improvement by closing the space at the lwer part of the fire pot by a balance valve, so pivoted as to remain in a proper position except when loaded by the excess of coal from the fire pot, falling thereon and caus ing its turning, and thus permitting the coal in excess to fall below the pot on the sifting bars of the ash pit, from whence it may be gathered; the weighted side of the valve al ways insures the closing of the space.
To enable others to make and use my improvement I would describe it as follows.
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of the apparatus, in which A, A, are the walls of the chamber; B, B, cross walls separating the air chambers from the furnace; C, a division wall separating the fire chamher from the exit gas chamber D. Above this wall C, will be noticed a dotted line representing an extended partition between the pipes by which the heat and smoke is carried near the top thereof and over which it passes in its descent to chamber D, from the latter it escapes into the chimney.
E, E, E, are the air pipes, between and around which the heat and gases pass; F, the fire box; G, G, the side walls thereof, over which any excess of fuel falls on the valves II, H, and by their turning delivers the ex cess of coal 011 the lower grating.
Similar letters on the several figures refer to like parts.
Having described my improvement in heaters and furnaces, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The arrangement in the fire chamber of the balance valves H, H, as described for the purpose of preventing an undue quantity of coal from remaining in the fire box substantially in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS WV. LEEDS.
