FURNACE FOR HEATING BUILDINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,439, dated August 14, 1855.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. SEXTON, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnaces for Heating Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings forming part of this specification, in which- F igure 1 is a front elevation of the furnace. Fig. 2 is a top view of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 00 :20.

The nature of my invention consists in covering the fire chamber with a pair of concave-convex plates, placed one above the other, with their convex surfaces outward, and slightly separated along their edges; the space between the concave surfaces of the plates communicating by a pipe with the external air, so that a current will pass through this space and issue from the opening between the edges of the plates into the main air chamber, and pass from thence by the usual exit flues. The object of this improvement being to utilize the heat of the upper portion of the fire chamber; and at the same time admit of the furnace being constructed with a diminished height, by the cooling of the covering of the fire cham ber produced by the current of air through the space above described: thus adapting the furnace to low cellars and other localities where the usual construction of furnaces could not be employed.
The details of construction and operation will be understood from the following description and reference to the drawing, in which the several parts are thus denoted.
A is the ash pit either of brick or cast iron; 13, grate; C, fire chamberof cast or sheet iron, having a feed opening (a) with a projecting mouth Z); F F, semicircular flues-connected by pipes c and (Z. The latter communicating with the fire chamber by pipe e and provided with the exit flue f for the smoke and gas. In pipe (Z between pipe 6 and flue f is a damper operated by rod B, so that the smoke and gas may be made travel in direction of the arrows through the radiator fiues F F. These radiator fiues F F are concentric with the cylinder, with a space between, for the passage of air upward.
D D are concavo-convex plates, one above the other: the lower fitting closely over the fire chamber the plates joined by a collar h with a pipe H, and slightly separated around their edges by the projections 2', thus forming a chamber I over the fire chamber and communicating with the external air by pipe H, and with the main air chamber by the space between the edges of the plates; these plates are constructed so that they may be reversed in position when the lower plate becomes burned.
The operation of my invention is as follows: External air enters by pipe H to chamber I and passes by opening m between the plates D D to the main air chamber, whence it is discharged by the ordinary exit fiues. This passage of a current of cool air over plate D prevents to a considerable extent the burning out which would obtain in consequence of the low position of said plate. And moreover as great heat is thus received by the said bottom plate, the additional top plate D affords the best possible means of utilizing this heat by a current from the outside.
The operation of the other parts of the furnace need not be here particularized as it is apparent from the drawing to all acquainted with the construction of furnaces.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The convertible covers D D of the fire chamber in combination wtih the pipe I-I constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as, and for the purposes specified.
