X-RAY GONE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Septn 7, 1920.-
Applcation Iled September 21, 1918. Serial No. 255,213.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HECTOR P. MAC- LAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Park Ridge, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in X-Ray Cones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates yto protective cones employed in X-ray work for preventing the X-rays from acting upon undesired parts and morel specifically my invention relates to such cones employed in connectionl with the making of radiographs of the mouth and teeth. For this use it has been found difficult to hold the protective cone in the desired place on the face of the 'patient on account of the irregular conformation of theface. For example, after the operator has properly placed the cone and before the exposure could be made, the patient, having nothing to indicate to him the desired position in which to hold his head, easily moves its slightly and thus throws the apparatus out of its proper relation to the part being radiographed. My invention avoids this difficulty by providing in connection with the cone, guides or Supports to engage the face of the patient, lwhich supports are adjustable to firmly engage any part of the face for any desired angle of the-axis of the cone.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cone and A Fig. Q- shows the cone in side elevation end partially in section.
Similar numerals refer to Similar parts throughout the several views.
As shown in the drawings, the device consists of sheet of metal 10, in the form of a frustum of a cone, this part being of any suitable material such as brass to4 give strength an j stability to the device. A flange 11,'axfnular in form, is attached to t e part 10 to facilitate supporting the cone fr m a standard. On the inner surface of the part l() a protective lining 12 of suitable material such as lead, is provided to prevent the X-rays from acting uponparts not desired. The lead is .folded over the edges of the sheet 10 as indicated to hold it in place. l
At three equidistant points around the outer surface of the sheet 10 and midway betweenits ends, posts 13 are secured to said sheet and carry clamping screws 14 for holding r0ds15, which are slidahly mounted in said posts substantially parallel with the sides of the cone, in any adjustment it is desired to give said rods to properly locate said cone relatively to the face of the patient. The rods are preferably of insulating material such for example as hard rub` ber to protect the patient from shock resulting from any electric charge that may find its way to the cone.
In using my improved cone, it is supported by any convenient standard as is common in the art, and adjusted relatively to the face of the patient so that the. X-rays passing through it will be applied to the place to be radiographed. The rods 15 are then adjusted to rest at their outer ends against the Iface of the patient7 in which position they are securely held by the screws 14. This affords the patient a positive indication of the position in which the head .is to be held and to a certain extent supports the head in that position, thus reducing to a minimum the danger that the patient will move from the proper position between the time that the apparatus is given the desired adjustment and the end of the exposure of the dry plate.
The flange 11 is provided with opposite notches 16 in its outer edge to facilitate loeating it upon and securing it to the supporting mechanism.
In carrying out my invention, I do not limit myself to the use of three rods l5 as I may. employ any other convenient number, nor do I limit myself to using my improved device upon the face, as it is equally effective in any` connection where small areas are to be treated and ordinary compression devices cannot, from the nature of the part, be used. I may employ therefore any equivalents known to the art at the time of the filing of this application without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
From the above it will be understood that, my invention provides a means for project amil ends may conform to any irregular surface at whaterer angle the Xaays may be pro jet-ted; ny desired deviree may be eniployed instead of the rods referred to, the only requisite beine' that they shall, to realize my invention7 be fapable of eu'eli move nient and adjustment that their outer ends may eiigage an irregular surface for any de nii-ed angle of projection of the Arrays agfainat eaid surilaee..
What claim is:
l. ln eoinbinatioinv a tubular/shield for 'the local application of Ztl-raf, and rode projieetingf troni the end ot said shield lor engaging the enrtaee treated.
combination, a tubular Shield for the local application ot' -raye7 roday slidably Ycarrie( by Said shield lfor engaging the eur-- fare treated? and clamping' screws 'for holding; said rods in any desired adjustment.
il. 'ln combination, a conical tubular shield for the local application ulv X-rays, posts carried by said shield and rode of ineulatiilxg material adjustably mounted in said poste to engage the surface treated. Y
i. .ln combination, a, ronieal tubular X-ray shield, posts projecting outwardly from said Shield, and rodel ot' ineulating material adjustably mounted in said poete substantially parallel with the outer Surface of Said Shield to engage the sui-tare treated.
o. ln eoinblnation 7 a conical tubular lX-ray Shield. posts carried on the outer surfare ot said shield, rods of insulatingr material slidably mounted in `eaid posts substantially parallel with the outer surface of said shield to engage the surface treated, and clamping srrews in said poste for holding` said rods in `luy desired adjustment.
3. ln combination, atubular X-ray shield, and members associated with said shield and capable ol independent movement to engage, an irregular treated surface, whereby in treating said eurt'aee the X-rays may be given any desired angle relativelyt'o said surface and said members may be moved to engage said surface for said angle of appliration of the X-I'HYS- T. lu combination, a tubular X-ray shield, members aseoeiated with said shield and rapable of indeliendentmovement to engage anl irrerrular treated surface, and means for damping said n'ieinberel in any' position of adjustment, whereby in treating said Surface the .T-rays may be given any desired angle relatively to said surface and said members may be moved to engage said surface for said angle of application of the X-rays and clamped in said .engaging position.
.lt witness whereof l hereunto subscribe my name this 16th day of September, A. D.
HECTOR l). MAGLAGAN.
