Abstract

1475303 Radiography EMI Ltd 29 May 1974 [5 June 1973 13 Dec 1973 14 Feb 1974] 26811/73 57715/73 and 6809/74 Headings H4F and H5R In a radiological examination apparatus in which a slice of a body is traversed by a fanshaped spread or a scanned beam of X or gamma radiation, the absorbed rays being measured and used to construct a representation of the absorption over the slice and the source and detecting means being arranged to orbit the body to irradiate it from different directions, there is provided a radiation attenuating mass which rotates with the source and the detecting means and so presents a substantially constant profile to the radiation whatever the source position, the purpose of the mass being to compensate for different radiation path lengths in the body. The attenuating mass can take various forms, e.g. a Perspex (Registered Trade Mark) sectoral sheet with the source at the apex and the radiation directed in the plane of the sheet which has cut-out portions to partially or completely enclose the object position Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown). In another form, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) the mass is in two halves each of which is a rectangular block with a circular segment removed the two halves being clamped around the object which is held in the two segments. Figs. 11 to 14 (not shown) show the attenuating masses as blocks arranged in the incident beam and having cylindrical cavities or circular segmental depressions on the outer faces, a mechanism being provided to allow for possible non-coincidence of the axis of scanning rotation and the axis of the object. The attenuating mass can be solid or liquid.
