UNITED STATES WILLIAM A. FINDLEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. 7, 19520.
Application inea November is, 1919. serial No. 338,970.
To all lwho/1a t may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, VILLIAM A. F INDLEY,
ka citizen of the United States residin@` in the city and county ot' San F rancisco and St-ate of California, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in rlools, or which the following is a specification.
ldy invention Arelates to improvements in tools of the class used for beveling, expanding and bending the ends of boiler tubes into boiler heads wherein a reciprocating ham- .mer is provided with a plurality of shoulders adapted to successively bevel, expand and bead the end of a boiler tube and operates in conjunction with means for holding said hammer to the work.
'llhe primary object of the present invention is to provide improved means for suecessively beveling, expanding and beading the ends of the boiler tubes and the like.
. A further object oit the present invention is to provide a new and improved tool adapted to bevel, expand and bead the ends ol the boiler tubes and the like.
Another object of the present invention is to` provide an improved tool adapted to be reciprocated by a pneumatic hammer or the like and having a plurality ofshoulders by means of which, when used successively, boiler tubes may be effectively secured within a boiler head. i
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an improved tool of the character descril'ied having means for holding the said tool up to the worl being performed. i Y Y .lt is a still further object to provide an improved reciprocatory tool ot the character described having` improved means 'for normally preventing the rotation orp said tool whereby the proper shoulder may be held to the work and thereby prevent mar# ring of the end of said tube.
l accomplish these several objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of referenceare used to designate similar parts throughout the said specifications and drawings,` and in which: v
Figure l is a broken sectional view of a portion' of a tube and boiler head disclosing the application of my improved tool during the beveling process;
Fig. 2 -is a similar view disclosing the position of the tool during the expanding process;
Fig. 3 is also a similar view disclosing the position of the tool during the beading process;
Fig. L is an end elevation of Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View on line 5 5 of Fig'l in the direction indicated, disclosing the opposite end olf the tool ifrom that disclosed in Fig. 1l.
'lle'.errino` to the drawings the numeral lA is used to designate a core having a longitudinally disposed bore 2 opening on one side thereof. The core l is also provided on one end thereof with a Hat longitudinally disposed surface 3 having an arcuate groove 4i therein, said groove 4i having an enlarged portion G the purpose of which wil hereinalter be more iully described.
A latch or lug 7 is pivotally mounted upon the core l as at S and is pr .f'idcd with an extension 9 bearing against a longitluliually disposed spring .ll secured to the core l and having a lateral extension l2 extending into the longitudinal bore 2 of said core l. llllhcn the core l is inserted within the end of the tube la the lug 7 engages the outer surface of a boiler head or plate 16 and thereby presents a resilient resistance to longitudinal movement of the core l within the tube 14.
Silidably and rotatably mounted within the bore. 2 of the core l, and with the inner end thereof r sting against the extension l2 ol the'spring ll is a reciprocatory hammer l? having an enlarged portion l5 provided with a beveling shoulder 19, an expanding shoulder 19 and beading shoulder or ef;- tension 20 allY arranged in substantially the same place, the hammerli- 'is also provide-:l with a hexagonal extension 2l adapted to be engaged by a pneumatic hammer or the like not shown.
The enlarged portion l5 is also provided with beveled lugs 22 which normally engage the flat surface 3 of the core l while the intermediate portions ot said enlarged portion l5 slidably engages the groove 4l; adjacent said il at surface By moving the enlarged portion l5 of the hammer li' opposite the enlarged portion 6 oit the groove 4. the hammer 17 may be rotated, moving one of said lugs 22 through said enlarged portion 6 until the required shoulder is in position to engage the end of the tube la.
prising a slidable and rotative hammer having a plurality ol shoulders thereon adapted to successively bevel, expand and bead the end of a tube onto a boiler head or the like; a core having a bore on one side thereof to slidably and rotatably hold said hammer Within said tube and adjacent the internal Wall thereof; and a resilient shim detachably connected to the core and adapted to engage one portion or' the interior Wall of the tube and retain the core and hammer therein against the opposite Wall ot' said tube.
