PATENT OFFICE.
ETIENNE CHALLET, OF GENVE, SWITZERLAND.
SLIDING CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed Getober 22, 1919. Serial No. 332,424.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that Yl, ETIENNE CHALLn'r, a citizen or `tiwitzerland and a resident ot Geneve, Switzerland, have invented new and nseifnl improvements in sliding` calipers, 'ot which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to sliding calipers, and itsl objects are to provide in the tace et the sliding arm thereofa longitudinal angular groove having its inclined inner sides in thesame plane with the usual inclined sides ot' the vernier thereof; to mark the measuring graduations or divisions on the inclined sides of the sliding arm and to place the denetation marks or numerals tor the divisions on the lower iiat face in the groove;
while the vernier snbeivisions and numbers are marked on the inclined sides and flat top surface respectively of the vernier.
My invention is shown in the annexed drawing, in which Fig-ure l is a plan or' the sliding calipers, and Fig. 2 a section on line -B of Fig. l..
ln the outer iiace (L ot the sliding` arm ot the calipers i make a longitudinal `jroove having inelinei'l sides 7) and c so arranged as to be in plane with the sides d and e respectively of the Vernier On the sides al and e of the Vernier are marked the usual subdivisions. The normal measuringI are marked on the inclined sides l) and c in the groove and the corresponding' numerals are marked on the lower flat face g ot said groove, while the subdivisions ot the vernier have the corresponding denominating numerals on the top tace f. Ey way of example, the divisions on corresponding with the subdivisions (l on the Vernier, are metric divisions and the divisions on o and 7" respectively are English inclrdivisions.
Having thus described my invention, l declare that what l claim and desire to have patented in the United States of America, is:
In calipers, an arm formed with a longitudinal groove'having inclined sides provided with scales, the lower part or' said groove being,- provided with marks or numerals corresponding` to the graduation of said scales and a member slidable along said arm and having inclined faces lying in the same planes as the inclined sides of the arm, said 'faces being provided with Vernier graduations to cooperate with said scales.
ETIENNE CHALLET.
