ratus, of which the following is a specification.

This lnvention has for its ob ect to provide an apparatus for use in moving a flexible strip upon which may be entered, a large number or names wlth designatlng numerals and other data, the construction to be suchthat recordlng of the data maybe made after the strip has been moved, and that the strip may be moved for the purpose of finding a required data.

The invention includes a box for containing a pair of spools or cylinders upon which the strips may be mounted, means whereby either of the spools may be positivelyrotated or may rotate as idlers, and convenient means for assembling or disassembling the parts. Other features relating to novelty and utility will be hereinafter described in detail.

The apparatus consists, in part, of an elongated casing 1 preferably rectangular in plan which may be placed" on a counter or table when in use, said casing being provided with a lid 2 having an aperture 3 formed transversely therein midway between its ends, and also provided with a shelf 1 near its top midway between its ends, so that when the lid is lowered its aperture will be disposed immediately above the shelf.

are cylinders 5 and 6 each, preferably, being provided with a slot 7 formed longitudinally therein and provided with a recess 8 opening upon the slot.

Numerals 9 and 10 respectively indicate disks, these being arrangedin pairs, each disk 9being provided at its middle with a depression or chamber 11 angular in plan, and each-disk 10 being provided at its mid dle with a depression 12 preferably of coneshape.

Numerals 13 indicate a pair of apertured bearing-blocks or plugs which are removably mountedin suitable apertures formed in one of the sides of the casing for receiving a pair'of pivot-pins 141 which are adapted to engage in a depression 12 of a disk 10, each pin 14: being provided with a circular groove 15 for receiving a latch 16, said latches engaging in the grooves for preventing end-thrusts and being pivotally mounted. to swing from the inner side of the casing.

By the construction described, the cylinders 5 and (3 are provided with a pivotal mounting for one of their ends, and it will be seen that the parts may be readily assembled and that the cylinders 5 and 6 may be removed from the casing whenever required by withdrawing the pins 14 after latches 16 have been swung upwardly from the grooves 15.

Numerals 17 and 18 indicate a pair of gear-wheels each being provided with a stub-shaft 19, said sha't'thaving a circular groove 20 formed therein and. provided between its free end and the groove 20 with. a boss 21 which is threaded thereon; that part of each stub-shaft adjacent to its coneshaped end being formed angular in cross section for engagement within chamber or angular depression 11 of a disk 9.

As described" it will be understood that a revoluble movement of the gear wheels 17 and 18, in either direction, will cause a corresponding revolublc movement of the cyl inders 5 and 6, the bosses 21 engaging the disks 9 to prevent end-thrusts of the cylinders, any end-thrusts of the shafts 19 being prevented by means of set-pins 22 which engage in grooves 20, the set-pins 22 being mounted in bearing-blocks 23 which are suitably secured to the side of the casing opposite to the bearing-blocks 13.

As described, and when the parts are as sembled, each stub-shaft 19 which projects inwardly of one side of the casing will. be disposed in line with a pivot pin 14 which projects inwardly from the opposite side of the casing, the axes of these parts and the axis of a cylinder being coincident, so that 'ections 27 for en a 'in the inner wall of- J b 23 23 a cylinder while disposed in a slot? after entering a recess 8 as a means for removably connecting the ends of the strip with the cylinders, and in operation, the strip may be moved longitudinally when being wound upon one of the cylinders, that part of .the strip between the cylinders being supported upon the shelf or ledge 4.

The apparatus may have a variety of uses but is particularly adapted for the use of State, county and Federal oilicials in the matter of collecting'taxes or for the use of insurance companies or the like where it is desirable to avoid delay in transacting business, the name of the firm, corporation or individual being written between the lines 25, and the data relating to the individual being placed adjacent thereto, between the lines 26.

In order that the strip maybe moved rapidly and in either, direction, and that either one of the cylinders may be rotated "positively while the other cylinder will rotate dependably, during operation, I provide a third gear wheel indicated at 28 and having a handle 29 for its manual'rotation, said wheel 28 having axial bearings in one end of a crank-arm 30, the opposite end of the crank-arm having a pivotal mounting in the side of the casing.

In operation, when it is desired to cause a movement of the strip in a direction of the cylinder 5 and to become wound thereon, the operator disposes the wheel 28 in en gagement with the wheel 17 and rotates said wheel 28 in thedirection of the long arrow shown in Fig. 1, the paper being supported by the shelf in such a manner that names or data may be written thereon as above mentioned when making a record, and as is ob vious, the proportion of parts may be such that the strip 'may be moved with considerablespeed this being a desirable feature when it is inecessary to find a name or other data quickly, the cylinder 5 being positively rotatedand the cylinder 6 rotating as an idler. J: a -21 The cylinder 6 maybepositivelyrotated operator first causing a swinging movement of the crank-arm 30 to permit the gear wheel 28 to engage the gear wheel 18, and by use of the handle 29 causing a rotation of the Wheel 28 in a direction reverse to that indicated by the long arrow, the arc of movement of the crank-arm being from its pivotal mounting to as shown best in Figs. 1 and 4:. 7

While I have shown and described construction in detail it has been for the purpose of explaining my preferred constructionor one embodiment of the invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to these details, nor to form, size proportion or material to be used, and I may change details of construction within the scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim V 1. A recorder comprising a casing, a-shelf therein, a cover for the casing having an opening over the shelf, a pair of reels in the casing adapted to wind and unwind a web back and forth over said shelf, each reel comprising a pair of end disks having depressions therein constituting bearing for the reel, one of the depressions being formed with angular walls, pivot pins journaled in the casing at one side and having ends engaging in the depressions of the adjacent disks, said pins having grooves therein, latches pivoted in the casing and normally resting in the grooves to lock the pins in place, stub shafts journaled in the opposite wall of thecasing and having angular ends for fitting in the angular depressions of the disks, pinions on said stub shafts, manually rotatable gear wheel journaled to swing alternately into and out of meshwith said pinions, and drums held between said disks and having means to detachably engage with the ends of the web.

2. In a recording device comprising a casingfa shelf in the upper central portion of the casing, a hinged cover for the casing having an opening directly above the shelf, a pair of reels in the casing at opposite sides of the shelf and below the same, said reels having a web wound thereon and passing over said shelf, each reel composed of a pair of spaced apart disks having depressions therein, one of said depressions having straight sides, a hollow drum secured to said disks and having an axial slot therein with a wide recess at one end thereof for receiving the end of the web, means on the web for entering the recess but adapted to secure the web on the reel'while in the slot, bearing pins journaled in the said walls of the casing and entering the depressions in said disks, one of said pins being straight sidedto'fit the straight sided depression and form a: driving connection therewith, pinions exterior of the casing and mounted on the driving pin having straight sides, a swinging crank arm mounted above and between the pinions, and a hand-actnating gear wheel ournaled on said arm and adapted to swing alternately into and out of mesh with said pinions.
