Application filed April 27. 1912. Serial No. 693,
'1' all ilk/mm. if may rower-i1:
lie it known that l, ULYsses G: ROBIN- sox. a citizen of the United States, residing at Belgrade, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful (.alcMating-Machine. of which the Following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide. in a calculating machine, novel means for maintaining the record web taut, so that the web may be driven readily by an actuating;- roller, the web being held in proper condition to cooperate with an indicator.
turthcrobject oi the invention is to provide a calculating machine from which the iecord-holdin 1 elements and the indicators ma be removed readily, permitting the machine to be used for calculations of different sorts.
dWith the foregoing and other objects in i iew. which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment 01E invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit oi the invention.
in the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig. 2 is a t *ansverse section; Fig. 3 is av longitudinal section. the cutting plane passing between the constituent parts of the case: and Fig. 4 is a tragniental end elevation of the case.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a case 1. comprising a back :2 and a front 3. the parts 2 and being of box-like construction. The rear wall of the back is indicated at L and is preferably impertor-ate. there being an opening 5 in the front wall of the part I} of the case. Across the opening extends a transparent plate 6.
The part- 2 ol the case 1 may be provided with a handle T. he parts :2 and 3 being united in their lowermost portions by hinges 9.
The parts '3 and 3 of the case 1 may be equip ed with supporting strips 9. to aliord a firm base.
.\ny suitable locking means may be pro vided for holding the parts 2 and 3 ot the case together. In the present instance book is pivmed to the back "2' and is Specification of Le tters' Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914-. see.
adapted to cooperate with an eye 11 carried l the front 3. I
In both of the end walls 12 ot' the parts 2 and 3 of the case 1 there are mating notches, one set oi notches 1% being of semi-circular form, to define a circular opening 15. The other set oi notches are of elongated to In, as indicated at 16. to define an elongated opening 17.
The invention includes a primary roller 35, provided with trunnions 18 at its ends, which trunnions 18 are journaled in the openings 15 formed by mating notches l4. -The trunnions 18 terminate in knobs 19, located outside of the case 1 and constituting means whereby the primary roller 35 may be rotated, the knobs 19 onstituting means for preventing the primary roller from moving eudwise within the case 1. The invention furthenincludes a secondary roller 20 provided at its. ends with trunnions 22, received in the openings 17 de fined by the registering notches 16. The
trunnions are held-tor rotation in the openings 17, the construction. however. be ing such that the. trunnions may move trans versely in the openings 17. thus permitting the secondary roller 20 to have transverse movement. 1
An endless. record web trained about the rollers and 20. The web 523 is supported by the primary roller so and in its turn constitutes a means for supporting the secondary roller 20. The secondary roller 20 acts gravitationally to maintain the web 183 taut. so that the web maybe actuated readily l. the primary roller 85 when the said roller is rotated through the medium ol the knobs 19.
A pair of indicators i3 1 and extend across the opening 5 and since the web 23 is maintained taut by the gravitational c tion of the secondary roller '20, the web at all times in position to ci'ioperate with the indicators and 25. There are opening-'- 26 in the end walls 12 ol the cas 1. hrough which openings the indicators 2'; nd 25 may be inserted. both ends of tin irdmators being thzis supljioricd h the (.056 l. *lJne end oi? the case 1 may be equipped via a s-et screws ii". adapted to engage the indicators 24 and to hold the same against ll il 'T dinal i'i'rovcment.
The record web may he inscribed in any suitable imnner and the indie tors 34: iii.-

another.
and 25 may be inscribed-to cooperate with the Web. It been presupposed in the present instance that the device is to be used by a lumber dealer, and with this end in view, tn o tablesare inscribed upon the Web 23, one of which tables is adapted to be employed for indicating the number of board feet'in a stick of timber of given dimensions. This table includes a central vertical column of figures indicated at 28, which figures serve to indicate the number of pieces of timber. Parallel to the column of figures indicated at 28 are other columns of figures indicated at these columns of figures shown at 29 serving to indicate the number of board feet in a stick of timber the length and the trans verse dimensions of which are known. T he transverse dimensions of the stick of timber are indicated, as set forth at 30, upon the member 24, and the length at 31. When the Web 23 coiiperates with the indicator :24: it is possible to read oli at a glance, the number of board feet in having a given length and a given cross sectional area. Referring to the upper part of Fig. 1 it will be observed that the operator is informed at a glance that twentyfour sticks of timber 2 by 10 and sixteen feet long contain six-hundred and fortyboard feet.
The device may be used also to indicate the price of a given quantity of lumber at a given price per thousand board feet. With this end in view, another table is inscribed upon the Web 23, which table appears in the lower portion of Fig. 1. The
table under consideration comprises a central vertical column of figures indicated at 32, this column setting forth the number of board feet. Parallel to the column are other columns indicating the values of fixed numbers of board feet at fixed prices per Upon the indicator 25 may be inscribed the prices per thousand feet, as indicated at 34. Referring to the table shown in the lower portion of Fig. 1 it will be seen, for instance. that three board feet at thirty-five dollars a thousand will cost ten cents.
The tables above mentioned are extremely simple and further detailed description of their operation is unnecessary.
Recalling that the device herein disclosed may be provided with webs 23 having graduations dillerent from those shown, it is obvious that the indicators 24 and 25 must be removable. readily. and that it must be possible to substitute one web for Attention is therefore directed to the fact that by loosening the set screws 27,
a stick of timber -.on.e set of indicators 2 l-25n1ay he slipped whereupon the rollers 35 and 1 may be re moved, permitting the insertion of another web 23. The indicators 2% and 25 are longitudinally adjust'able,'and are adjustable transversely of the direction oftravel of lhe web 23, and consequently, by manipulating the set screws 27, the graduations upon the indicators may be made to correspond to the graduations upon the 'Web.
The web is actuated by rotating the iz-riinary roller through the medium of the knobs 19. Since the web 23 serves as the sole means 'for supporting the secondary roller 20 for vertical movement, the Web is at all times maintained taut by the gravitational action of the secondary roller. The web will. therefore, grip the primary roller 35 to such an extent that the Web will travel readily when the primary roller is actuated. Furthermore, owing to the fact that the web is maintained taut by the action of the secondary roller 17, the Web will be held close to the indicators 2i and 25.
The device herein disclosed is of few parts, and may be fashioned at trifling ex pense.
It is obvious that the dimensions of the structure may be increased greatly, thereby permitting the solution of a Wide variety of problems. 7
Having thus described the invention,
what is claimed is 1- A device,- of the class described, comprising an upper cylindrical roll, means for revolubly supportingthe same, a lower cvlindrical roll. constructed to rotate and shift in a. plane extending through the axes of the said rolls, an endless web trained around the said cylindrical rolls and provided with tabulations thereon, a pair of indicating rods lying in a plane tangentialto the surface of both of said cylindrical r'olls, the
said indicating rods extending substantially parallel and adjacent to the line of tang'ency of the said plane as defined by the Web with the said peripheral surfaces of the rolls.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own. I have hereto aiiixed my nature in the presence of two Witnesses.
