Description

SEL DIS. Muffs.
Patented Jan. 21,1873
UNITED STATES RAPHAEL M. SELDIS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,163, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAPHAEL M. SELDIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Muffs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention. Fig.2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of a piece of leather, and Fig. 4 is a plan of a piece of fur, which I use in the construction of my mufi.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a muif both the front and the back of which are partly constructed of fur and partly of leather without any waste of material, thereby producing a muff which is cheap, convenient for use, and elegant in appearance.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a muff, which may be of cylindrical or oval form or barrel-shaped, my invention being applicable to muffs of diiferent shapes. In the construction of this muE I use a piece, B, of leather (see Fig. 3) and a piece, 0, of fur. Each of these pieces is divided in to two parts, the parts of the piece B being designated by the letters a and b and the parts of the piece 0 by the letters 0 and 01. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) After the pieces Band C have been cut in parts, as above described, I take the piece a of leather and apply it to the front of the muff; and the space in the leather left open by cutting out the piece b is then filled up by inserting therein the piece 01 of fur, as shown in Fig. 1. In the same manner I'apply the piece 0 of fur to the back of the muff and the space left by cutting out the piece at is filled up by inserting therein the piece b of leather. The ends of the mufi are finished in the usual manner; and, if desired, suitable hooks or other devices are applied to retain a cord. 1.
The back piece b of leather may be provided with a pocket, 0, (see Fig. 2,) and the front piece d of fur may be ornamented in any desirable manner.
It will be readily seen from the above description that my invention is applicable to mutfs of different shape; and by cutting up the leather and fur and interchanging the pieces b and d in the manner described I obtain a muff of a novel and'elegant appearance without wasting any material.
7 What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a muff the front of which is formed of a piece, a, of leather and a piece, d, of fur, while its back is formed of a piece, 0, of fur and a piece, I), of leather, substantially as shown and described.
This specification signed by me this 15th day of November, 1872.
