IMPROVEM ENT IN POSTAGE-STAMP AFFIXERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,143, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. MORGAN, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Postage-Sta-mp Affixer, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a sponge-holder and sponge for wetting the part of the letter to receive the stamp, with or without a press er-roller to press the paper 011 the wet sponge, and a stamp-holdin g case, in which a package of stamps are placed with the pasted side up on a plate which is on a fixed stand, while the case can be pressed down along the package of stamps so that an envelope or other paper placed on the top of the case, being previously wetted by the sponge, and then placed on the case, will, by being pressed down by the hand or presser, have a stamp affixed to it; the said sponging devices and the stamp holding and affixing devices being arranged on one stand or base-plate, comprising a complete and efficient apparatus for affixing stamps upon letters, checks, and other papers, all as will be hereinafter described.

A is a sponge for wetting the part of the envelope or other piece of paper to which the stamp is to be affixed. It is placed in any suitable holder, B, and may have a presser-roller, B, above it or not; but I prefer to have it,
because in introducing the paper between itand the sponge the latter is caused to act as a brush. and thus applies the water better than when the paper is applied directly on the top of the sponge and taken off in the same manner. O is a stamp holding case, which is adapted, as to size, to hold a pack of stamps, J, which will be placed in it with the pasted sides up. This case is fixed on avertical post, D, which rises up through the bottom and has a plate, E, on its top as large as the interior of the case. Below the bottom of the case is a coiled spring, F, which keeps the bottom of the case up against the plate E, except when said case is pressed down to affix a stamp, for which it is so fixed to the said post that it can be moved down and up on it within a suitable guide, L.
The letter or other piece of paper to be stamped is first pressed upon the wet sponge under the roller; then it is placed on the top of the case (J, and the latter forced down by pressing the paper upon it either by the hand ora presser, H, and pressed upon the uppermost stamp with such force that said stamp will adhere to the wet paper, which is then removed. The stamps are prevented from going down with the case by the plate E. A presser, H, may also be used with the sponge, instead of the roller, if preferred, or one presser may answer for both by having its support I swiveled to the bed-piece K so as to swingfrom the sponge to the stamp-case and back, the two being so arranged on the base-plate K that the said presser will swing over both; but I prefer to use the presser H for the stamp-case and the roller-presser B for the sponge, the said roller-presser being supported by a sponge, N, which is so adjusted as to press the roller on the sponge with the requisite force.
The sponge-case will be pivoted at O and fastened with a thumb-screw at P, so that it can be swung from under the presser to remove the sponge for wetting it. y
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A stamp-holding case, (J, combined with a post, D, plate E, and a spring, F, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the sponge and sponge-holder, of the presser B, substantially as specified.
