Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARRIGO TEDESCO,
OF TURIN, ITALY, ASSIGNOR T SOCIETA ANONIMA STABILIMENTI BIAK, OF TURIN, ITALY, A COMPANY OF ITALY.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
' ZINC ALLOY.
1,350,892. Specification of Letters Patent.
No Drawing.
I To all whom it may concern:
resistance to the action of atmospheric agents.
Alloys of the kind above referred to have properties complying with the requirements for a large number of uses, and they are also very cheap, owing to their large content of zinc (up to 90%); but they do not have a pleasing color nor a satisfactory appearance as required for the manufacture of ornamental articles. I
According to this invention, the alloys .are improved from the standpoints noted by an addition of tin; this addition having the further advantage of improving the resistance of the alloy to atmospheric agents, so that it is of importance in connection with alloys not containing manganese.
The addition of tin according to this invention may be made to zinc alloys of any kind and composition; say to alloys com- Applicationfiled July 11, 1919. Serial No. 310,257.
prising zinc and aluminum; zinc, nickel and aluminum; zinc, copper, aluminum and nickel, and generally speaking to Zinc alloys of any kind with or without the addition of rare metals.
As the addition of tin gives rise to a reduced resistance of the metal, the amount of tin added must be confined within smalllimits and must not exceed 4 per cent. On the other hand, tests have shown that the desired result may be obtained with very slight additions of tin, say less than one per cent.
As an example of an alloy accordingto this invention, the following composition is mentioned:
Aluminum 9.5% Copper 1.0% v Tin 0.5% Zinc 89,. 00%
This alloy, when cast, has a resistance of 20 kg. per sq. 111111., and when suitably rolled has a resistance of 35-40 kg. per sq. mm.; it has a bright, brilliant color with white reflexes and, therefore, is adapted for ornamental articles and appliances of any kind.
I claim as my invention A high-strength zinc alloy, containing between 85 and 93% of zinc, between "3 and 12% of aluminum, and between 0.5 and 4% of tin.
Signed at Turin, Italy, this 12th day of June, 1919.
